Has anyone been to Wellington?

Is it worth visiting? I am contemplating cutting out half of the South Island from our trip in March and instead taking the ferry over to the southern part of the North Island for a few days. If we do this we'll be spending 24 hours less in a car. Any thoughts or suggestions? For the record (although I'm sure everyone on here knows already), we are not massive outdoors people. We like taking a several hour hike every once in a while, but once is enough for us for a long time. We are wine people. I'm most looking forward to exploring the wineries in Marlborough. I'm not so much excited with the idea of skydiving or something like that in Queenstown.

Re: Has anyone been to Wellington?

  • We were in Wellington for one day. It is a nice city although I prefer Christchurch (before the earthquake). Since we were only there for a day, we saw the cable car and went to a museum and some brewery DH wanted to go to. We were there in the middle of January and it was absolutely freezing! The weather in NZ can be very strange. I don't think you would be too upset if you missed it. I do highly recommend the black water rafting through the glow worm caves if you get a chance. We did that in the north island and it was awesome! (I am not usually a fan of adventure activities- wouldn't go skydiving for a million dollars but I loved the rafting!) we are on the way out now but if you have more NZ questions I can try to help (I've been 2x) but am by no means an expert!

  • Yup, I live in Wellington.

I love Wellington, but if I had a chance to be on the south island, I would stay there.  Wellington has lots of coffee shops and cafes, Te Papa museum (free), Zealandia (wildlife sanctuary), Weta stuff, and there are cool places outside of Welly to visit.  How long would you be on the north island?  I love Taupo, but that's nearly 4 hours drive from Welly, so not sure if that's possible in your itinerary.

Do you like other outdoor activities, like white water rafting or caving?  I know you said you aren't super outdoorsy, but those could be one-time adventure activities.

Where on the south island are you going?  I could try to help fill in some of your south island trip if you stay longer down there :)  I am envious...

    Cheers.

  • We have ten days total. We arrive in Christchurch and will drive to Kaikora where we'll spen the night. After that we'll go up to Marlborough for three nights. After that is what's up in the air. We have an additional 6 days/5 nights to play with but I really don't feel like wasting time in the car to get down to Milford and Doubtful Sounds. I do want to hike on a glacier, so I don't mind driving down that way. We need to end up in Christchurch because that's where we're leaving from. All suggestions are welcome.
