I have over a month's worth of vacation. I haven't traveled in a looong time. I need an overseas vacation. Now that I am single, I plan to travel by myself.
Anyone have any ideas on great destinations to go to alone? I am not a totally experienced traveler so easy and safe is good. I figured I'd stay in hostels and meet people, hopefully.
Please share any recs!
Re: I need a Vacay
I went to Taiwan and it was awesome! I wasn't alone per say, I went to visit a friend, but he worked a lot so I was pretty much on my own. HIGHLY recommended! X 100!!!!
I went to Spain alone this year and it was a great experience. If you decide to go to Spain (Madrid) I can't recommend a good hostel to meet people. I preferred Barcelona over Madrid, but I wouldn't recommend the hostel.
They see us rollin'...they be hatin'.
Have you ever considered Japan? It is one of the safest places in the world and you could so easily get around on the subway or trains. People are so nice when you need help.
Another suggestion if you have a month would be Sydney, Australia. People are super friendly there. I went there alone before and had friends within the first few days that I have kept for the last 15 years. You could stay for a while in Sydney and then go up to the Great Barrier reef.
Either one of those places would be my top two choices if I were to go somewhere alone. I have done loads of traveling alone in the past since I had a job that required travel and besides knowing where I was going to end up sleeping, I knew no one.
Honestly, if you can avoid hostels, I would. I think you can just as easily meet people out and about and you should consider going to where the locals are to experience whatever culture you can. For me, hostels are just "yuck".
This. Two of the best travel experiences that I have had were a study abroad in Mexico, where I had a host family and got to meet all of my host sister's friends, and a trip to Rome, where we rented an apartment instead of staying in a hotel, so we got more of a feel for an authentic Italian experience because we were going out to the market or bakery to buy breakfast in the morning with all the locals instead of hitting the hotel restaurant. I'd highly recommend renting an apartment (a travel agent can help you arrange it) wherever you decide to go!
