Can't decide: Puerto Rico vs Costa Rica vs Hawaii

Hubby and I are looking for some relaxation and adventure this April.  Please help us decide!

Re: Can't decide: Puerto Rico vs Costa Rica vs Hawaii

  • I haven't been to Puerto Rico but loved both Costa Rica and Hawaii (DH and I went to Maui last November and I studied abroad in CR while in college). For me, my decision would probably be swayed by how much time I'd have at the destination.  Coming from Philly, you'll have a much shorter flight, no jet lag (it's only an hour behind EST) so if time is more limited I'd say CR. However, if time isn't an issue, definitely do Hawaii. It would be much easier to go to CR than Hawaii in the future. Things will definitely be cheaper in CR but as I said both destinations are fantastic and you'll have perfect weather in April no matter where you decide on.

     Good luck deciding!

  • Thanks!  That's really helpful.  We have about 8-9 days total for the vacation.  For some reason, my hubby is not feeling CR, but I think it would be fabulous!  For Puerto Rico, we were considering spending one to two nights in San Juan and then the rest of the time on Vieques.

I'm open to other suggestions for locations as well!

  • What do you consider adventure?  Some people are more adventurous than others.  The PP had a good point about travel time.
  • I absolutely love Hawaii, but if you're coming from Philly, it's about a 13 hour flight, so that takes away pretty much two whole days just for flying.  IMO, coming from the east coast you should spend no less than 2 weeks in Hawaii.  It's just so far away and there's so much to see that I don't know if it's worth it to go for only a week or so.  We've been twice now (and actually flew out of Philly the first time) and both times we went for 2 weeks.  It was great because we had plenty of time to be adventurous and explore, but we also had downtime to relax.  We didn't feel rushed to try to cram everything in in a week.

So I would agree w/ pp that you should probably do PR or CR since they are so much closer and you wouldn't eat up so much time just getting there.  I don't think you could go wrong with either of them, they both would be be amazing trips.

  • Of the three, Hawaii is probably my favorite, but it is the farthest and the most expensive.

Puerto Rico is a close second for me. We had a destination wedding there in Old San Juan. We then spent about 10 days traveling around the island for our honeymoon. It was much more beautiful than I expected. We spent time near the rainforest, on Culebra, Ponce, and then in the mountains. The island is small enough that you could hit 2-3 different areas in the time you have.

Personally, I didn't love Costa Rica, but maybe we were in the wrong spot. We had a free time share in El Coco (Guanacaste) and it was just ok for me. But everyone else raves about CR, so I wouldn't listen to me. Maybe we were not in the best area.

  • My husband and I like to mix relaxation and adventure and we love Hawaii.  It's perfect for us.  (Granted, I've neer been to PR or CR, so I can't speak to those destinations.)

We're in Michigan, so a bit closer to HI than you, but not a lot.  We've done two trips there -- the first was 7 nights, the second was 10 nights.  Both were worth the long flights to us, since we enjoyed it so much.

We've visited Oahu, Maui, and the Big Island.  And we've done hiking, kayaking, snorkeling, and surfing.  And of course relaxing on the beach and by the pool.

  • there's not much of a flight time difference between san jose cr and san jose pr really. i think HI is too far of a flight for just a week.

i've been to both pr and cr and enjoyed them both but for different reasons. CR-active, dense jungly all around, PR has that in certain parts but for the most part in and around san juan it's just like here. that's not bad, there are tons of things that make it different from here but as far as there being 7-11s etc.. you get what i mean.  cr isnt that way. honestly youll have fun in either.
