Q for Londoners...

Is anyone a member of either the American Women's Club or the Kensington and Chelsea Women's Club?  I'd like to join one, and I'm leaning towards KCWC - only because a stranger recommended it to me yesterday - but I can't decide which and I don't want to shell out for both.  Would love any opinions if you know about or are a member of either group.  TIA...

Re: Q for Londoners...

  • It depends on how independently wealthy you are.

    Er, thanks.

  • I went to a few AWC events when I was there and was not impressed. It was, at the time. a lot of quite wealthy, older expats. I also had 2 friends kicked out for drinking at an event and was put off by the whole thing. There is more to the story than that but this is the gist of it.

  • Sorry, didn't mean to come off as rude.

Just that when I think about American Women's Clubs the images that come to mind are elderly women sitting in a Mayfair club drinking tea and stroking poodles dressed in Luis Vuitton.

Add in the words Kensington and Chelsea and the tea has been flown in from Columbia on private planes. LOL.

I don't know if a lot of us are in these clubs that are on this board - and from what I've heard the ones outside of English speaking countries are more relaxed and have a wider variety of members, etc.

Have you moved over here yet? Are you actually living in those areas?

Oh, they provided the alcohol. They just decided too much was consumed. It was not a good day.

  • I understand.  I'm definitely not going out of my way to look for something hoity-toity.  But the woman I met yesterday has been here for 15 years and said she met two of her closest friends through playgroups at KCWC.  That sounded appealing, and worth the ?72/yr considering I don't know anyone here.  I know there are lots of other kid groups to join, and I will, but I live in Fulham, close to Chelsea, so I may still join KCWC as well.
  • I didn't join either mainly because I can't do the day events and I found out that many of the women sent their kids to my school - too weird for me.  I think the KCWC will be good as it's reasonably close.  Personally, I'd try to also join groups that aren't American...so you get to know some people who are English/German/Etc...Americans in those clubs can be VERY insular and gossipy at times (from what I've heard)...but that said, there are some very lovely women who I know joined that club as well!

  • It wasn't the yearly fee that turned me off from the Zurich American Women's Club or the people. The issue was where they held their events and how much it would cost me to attended. They didn't pick the budget locations. We were saving money and we just didn't have the funds for me to keep up with $50 meals.

  • I belong to a women's club, although it's the British Women's Club. They should have some sort of potential new member coffee morning or something like that. Go to one and see what the membership is like and what the typical events are. I ended up joining the BWA here because the AWA group in KL is mainly older women who are the wives of oil execs. The BWA does more tennis and golf mornings while the AWA does more scrapbooking type things. Also the AWA is on the other side of town and their events are a giant PITA to get to.
  • I joined the American Women's Group in Paris last year. There were some lovely ladies but also it had a few too many older wealthy housewives. It made it difficult for me to join in on the activities that all occurred during the work day. I was also looking for people in my same life situation that I could hang out with regularly. I had more luck with meetup.com
