Graduation Trip Ideas?

Hello all! I am looking for suggestions for a graduation vacation.  My husband and I have decided that we are going to do a trip to celebrate my upcoming grad school graduation since we are very much in need of a vacation! We will not be bringing the kids, so we are not restricted to a family friendly location.  I would love to do Europe as neither of us have traveled much over there.  I have spent time in France, so that's out since we want to go somewhere new.  I would also prefer to save Italy for another trip since I really want to spend a lot of time there and we're looking at only being gone about a week.  I'm not too picky with what time of year we go.  We'd be flying out of Milwaukee and could probably spend up to $4000, though cheaper is always better :).  When I travel, I prefer not to hop around too much, especially since we'd only be there for a week.  Therefore, I would love one or two cities, or one city with a day trip.  DH is a total foodie, and I am a vegetarian (but not a picky one).  I favor lots of culture - museums, architecture, etc.  I am open to suggestions outside of Europe if anyone has any.  Let me know if I left anything out. Otherwise I'm looking forward to suggestions! TIA!

  • Do you get fish?  You could spend less than $4K and still have a great trip in Guatemala City and Antigua.  Anitgua was settled by the Spanish and has gorgeous architecture; although I'm not sure on museums, but I would assume can find some in Guatemala City.
  • my first thoughts were the following: barcelona, spain (awesome food, wine etc...) great city to explore, portugal, berlin, amsterdam, dublin, london etc..

so many places and if you can go at any time of year you can absolutely do them for less. or why not just go to italy for a week? hit one city like rome or venice and jsut stay there.

Friday, December 28 2012. The day I had emergency appendix surgery in Mexico and quit smoking. Proof that everything has a good side!! DH and I are happily child-free!! No due date or toddler tickers here!! my read shelf:
Alison's book recommendations, favorite quotes, book clubs, book trivia, book lists (read shelf)
  • Caribbean? Montreal? I hear Austin is an awesome city? What about Napa Valley?

I would say New Orleans but you don't need a week or a 4000 budget there...I would say 4 days and 2000. Of course you could combine that with one of the beachy on the gulf towns
