Hosting a party - keg vs bottles?

Hi,

I am going to be throwing an engagement party for a dear friend who recently got engaged!  There are about 30 people invited.  If it were you, would you get a keg for that amount of people, or just buy individual bottles of assorted beers?

The other hosts and I are trying to decide which is the more practical and economic decision, and we're stumped!  There will be white and red wine, also, but we're just nailing down the beer logistics.

Does anybody have recommendations on budget friendly places in the metro Atlanta area to buy beer/kegs?

Thanks for your help!

Re: Hosting a party - keg vs bottles?

  • 30 people with a keg plus wine seems like a lot of beer,
  • I think bottles would be a little classier, especially for an engagement party.

If it was just a summertime bash and there were more people I think keg + red solo cups would be fine.

You could try Sams or Costco for less expensive cases of beer.

  • unless you did a pony keg of a higher end beer (not like pbr or a bud light) and served in nicer glasses (i.e. pick up pint glasses from the dollar store)
  • With that many people, bottles for sure. If you don't drink it all, it won't go bad. Plus, you give people more variety. You wouldn't finish a keg, and all that beer would go to waste. I am a firm believer in not wasting beer Wink

  • I'd do bottles, then if you have left overs they won't go to waste.

if you'd suggested a keg of PBR...that's redneck =) a pony keg of something classy isn't...it just seems like more work!

I think it would be a great idea to get a pony keg of a microbrew or something high-end, especially if the couple is into good beer. Otherwise bottles, all the way.

  • we do bottles and our friends are some beer drinking folk.

Last time I hit up Total Wine and bought a large case of Miller Lite and i think 5 6-packs of different beers. Corona, Yeungling, Sweetwater, etc.

  • 30 people can't finish a keg? Wow, me and my friends drink too much... haha we just about finished a keg with only like 10 people drinking from it  Embarrassed
  • Have you considered a couple of those Minikegs?
