Southwest infant fares

How are they comparable to a regular ticket pricewise?  Just debating whether or not it would be worth it to book one for my 18 month old and put his car seat on the plane so he has his own space or just have him on my lap.

Re: Southwest infant fares

  • Do airlines still do infant fares for domestic flights? I thought it was pretty much the same price as any other ticket. Either way, getting your toddler their own seat is the most comfortable/easiest (and safest) way to fly.
  • Ditto to PP. I recently booked a trip to fly with our under-2 daughter, and I didn't find anyone who gave me a price break on the ticket.

  • I found this on the Southwest website.  Maybe I am reading it wrong, but it sounds like you get a discounted fare for a seat with a carseat.

Traveling with the infant in an FAA-approved car seat:

    • Affordable Infant Fares are available that enable a Customer to reserve a seat for an infant and use his/her FAA-approved car seat.
    • A boarding pass is required.
    • Online checkin is available if the infant traveling on an Infant Fare is age verified.
    • See below for additional information
  • I'd ask them. They wouldn't offer me one with a carseat when I tried to book a few weeks ago.

If memory serves me correct, someone mentioned they got it and it was only like 10% off. It's not a half-price ticket or anything.

  • During peak times they're damn pricey. I think an infant fare over Christmas last year was in the $400 range. Not sure how off-peak times would compare. I'd just call and find out.

How long is the flight? DD was a lap child for a 2.5 hour flight (with layover) and she was fine.

  • I have never found SW infant fares to be cheaper then their online prices. If you are buying a seat it doesnt matter if you have a car seat or not. We bought DD a seat when she was 18 months- there was no way I was lugging the car seat on the plane, we have a CARES harness, it's a FAA approved harness- it works great and fold up into my purse when we aren't using it.

  • Southwest's infant fares used to be like 50% off the full price ticket (so the anytime, fully refundable tickets).   They used to have great savings so you would end up paying double for your 'infant ticket' as you would for the cheapo ticket.

Call and ask, but it is likely that their Wanna Get Away and other specials will be cheaper then their infant ticket.
  • Thanks for the responses.  I will most likely just have him on my lap.  We are flying from Nebraska to S. Carolina, with 1 layover, not sure where though.  I will have my parents, sister and husband along so I guess he shouldn't get too bored and antsy. I was just curious is the infant price was worth it.
  • Ditto what PP's are saying - the one flight DS has been on his ticket cost the same as mine and DH's.

  • I just called over Christmas on this.  They will only do the child discount off the Anytime or Business fares, not the Wanna Get Away (online) fares.  Even with the discount, the full price Wanna Get Away fares were much cheaper in our case.

  • I just called Southwest about this on Monday.  An infant fare from Pittsburgh to Las Vegas (one way) would be $254.  The woman I spoke with recommended just booking the seat for her as an adult online if the fares were cheaper.  They were.

  • not sure about SW - but united fares for kids (even at age 6) are about 50% of adult prices.  you don't see it until you go through further and select flights.
