Talk to me about coffee. I have just started drinking it on a semi-regular basis because, well, it helps me to be regular. Just in case that was too subtle, you should know that I lovingly refer to my French press as my poop factory.
I have never liked it much, but I find it growing on me and I have some questions. Please excuse my ignorance.
What is it in the coffee that makes you poop? Is it the caffeine?
Are there different varieties of beans that have different caffeine levels like tea leaves do? I really like to limit my caffeine intake. Of course, if it's the caffeine that is the magic ingredient, I guess I am SOL in that dept.
What should I try? I have no idea what 'good' coffee is. When I was buying coffee for emergency situations, I used to just go for a macchiato. Since the poop factory entered my life, I have bought Seattle's Best breakfast blend, which is a 2 on their something scale. I am thinking that this is not quite as effective as my macchiatos have been in the past, but I don't know if it's me or if it's what I'm drinking. Suggestions? For prime poop making or just plain taste?

I don't think it's the caffine, I think it's something else. But I also haven't ever found decaf to work so well.
There IS a difference in caff. levels depending on type of bean, but more in how it's brewed (I remember there being something 'less healthy' about french press, but I forget what it was)

I got hooked on coffee for the same reason. I believe it's the caffeine that makes you poop!
Lighter roasts actually have a slightly higher caffeine content. Less of it gets roasted out, I guess. I don't know that it's a noticeable difference, though.
I buy whatever's cheap right now, though, so I'm not much help in recommendations. My boss's husband has a WB Mason account so we all order K cups through them for cheap.
Do you think it's how it's brewed or how it is roasted? Like would the macchiato have worked better because it's espresso and, therefore, roasted longer?
I am going to have to look up the French press being not good. I mostly bought it because it seemed stupid to commit to a whole coffee maker. Space is at a premium!
And now I want to try choffee too.

and expensive is why I haven't tried it...I mean, if I spring for it and hate it, it's a waste of money.

I usually am a tea drinker. I cut out caffeine completely when I was a freshman in college. Now, I have to eat something if I am going to drink coffee or I feel sick.
I am worried that if I start drinking it too often, it won't work on my insides anymore and that would just suck.
I think dark roasts typically don't have as much caffeine as lighter roasts, but it's all in how the bean is ground. Finely ground = more caffeine than coarser ground coffee.
I just started drinking coffee a little over a year ago, it helps with keeping migraines away and now I'm hooked. I'm into flavored varieties though, which some don't consider "coffee" but I like 'em.
What kind of beans have you been drinking Muddled? Do you like more mild coffee or bitter?
OH, I forgot, how it's prepared also affects the caffine content. May be part of the issue?

Heh, no problem. TMI alert, I spent most of my life constipated and have self-diagnosed IBS, lol. Fiber-y foods, laxatives, etc. just give me terrible, debilitating pain and gas but do not make me poop. Being active and drinking water helps, yeah, but coffee is the only thing that finally kicked my system into gear. Now I can go without it for a few days if I need to, but I enjoy coffee and drink it daily.
Interesting. Luckily, cholesterol is not an issue for me because I cannot see myself having the patience to cut up coffee filters.
Peets Major Dickenson's blend. Get it ground for a French Press.
You can also get Cafe du Monde-- It has some chicory in it so it is a little bit different.
ETA: Caffeine inhibits an enzyme that is thought to regulate mucosal secretions in your small intestine. Secretions go up, so fluid in your bowel goes up, and if the amount of fluid in your colon is greater than the amount of fluid you can reabsorb = poop!

total lurker here - but I've been drinking coffee regularly since high school, and it still works on my insides
I tried quitting coffee once, and ended up with so many issues it wasn't worth it! I just drink Folgers in the morning, usualy one of the brews that are on the 2-3 range of boldness.
I find darker roasts seem to help me poop more than lighter ones, but it oculd all be in my head. I prefer the taste of darker roasts.
My easy-to-find recommendations: Seattle's Best Henry's Blend and Starbucks Italian Roast.
When money's been tight in the past I have gone for the darkest Maxwell House or Folgers, but the joy I get from a good cup of coffee is worth the extra money, IMO.
