Meeting w/a Dietician - Any ?s I should Ask
I am finally doing it, I am going to a Dietician. I have been really strict since the new year but have not lost more than a pound. We are talking about 1500-1700 calories a day, less than 75 (more like 50 carbs), etc. I am so frustrated.
I know my body is out of whack, which is why I am going.
Normally, I would just go and do whatever, but I am thinking I need to prepare, perhaps ask questions. I don't know.
Thoughts?

If you have a food diary, exercise log and/or weigh-in log, I would definitely bring that information. The dietitian may be able to help pinpoint where specific changes should be made if they can review that type of detailed information.
I would also write down what you are hoping to get out of the meeting. For example, do you want him/her to prescribe a specific diet? Do you want him/her to review what you are doing and offer changes? Are you looking for answers on how your recent health issues may have impacted your metabolism? I guess I would think about what you hope to get out of the meeting and then jot down some questions based on that. Good luck with it and I hope it goes well.
I don't know how to word the specific questions to ask, but I would want to know what their philosophy is. Like, are they anti-white bread/sugar? Do they insist on several small meals vs 3 regular? Do they think you can only get the benefit of veggies if you eat them fresh or steamed, or does a kale/fruit smoothie fit the bill? Do they advocate fat free things? I don't know... just stuff that you can always find a zillion conflicting opinions for on the web.
For me, I'd be more inclined to listen to them if their philosophy fits with mine. For example, there is no such thing as fat free mayo, and any dietitian who told me I should use it instead of the real stuff would be out the door. Same thing with cheese. Life is too short for fat free cheese.
I've been seeing a dietician now for the past 2 months and it's done wonders. The first day was just a general meeting to go over my likes/dislikes with food and my food journal. The 2nd time was when she really broke down the calories, carbs, fats etc that I should be eating. I go next week for my 3rd appt. My "goal" that we both came up with was 1.5lbs a week and I've managed to lose 10 lbs since I started going to her. It wasn't so much getting rid of things more like tweaking.
Mine also started me on vitamins which I think helped since I never took them before.
Keep in mind it's not just the number on the scale it's also about your body fat percentage.
I would also consider sending your food log and questions ahead of time, if you have time.
That will give her a chance to look at it before you come to your appointment, which might make the first session more productive. Especially if you have questions specific your your health - considering that your case is more complex than most, probably.
I hate to say this - because I know it's generally good to lose weight if you're overweight - but, are you putting too much pressure on yourself too soon? Maybe you're not losing weight because your body is trying to get back to normal after all it's been through. Wouldn't it be good enough to just live a clean, healthy lifestyle for a while without worrying about the pounds?
I am worried about this as well. I am a total stress monger, which I know is part of the issue. I think I need a professional to talk me off the proverbial ledge.
