My BGs stink like pee! What am I doing wrong? I did two complete wash cycles on Sunday night and they still smell.
I use Planet detergent (can't remember how much but it was the recommended amount I think), do a cold rinse, hot wash w/detergent, cold rinse and an additional cold rinse sometimes.

Butting in...
CD goddesses! I'm interested in CDing. I've lurked on the CD board and done some research. While on mat leave I don't think CD will any issue at all. But once I go back to work I'm worried I'll end up giving up. I imagine I will get into a steady routine, so day to day washing should be easy since the machines do all the work. But I worry that if I run into too many issues (like stink, fit, absorbancy, etc) that I will end up quitting. Any words of advice? TIA!!!
Either way, they need to be stripped. Do a warm rinse, then fill the washer with hot hot water, add detergent, and let it soak overnight. If the smell is really strong (or if it isn't gone and you soak a second time) then add a squirt of blue Dawn dish soap. In the morning, let the wash cycle run. Run through 2-3 rinse cycles, or until there are no soap/detergent bubbles in the water during the rinse.
After they're dry, they shouldn't smell. If they do, try again. If the problem is persistent, you probably need a different detergent.
My biggest piece of advice (for anyone, really), is to buy as diverse a mix of diapers as possible. Don't invest in more than 2-3 diapers of any brand, and get a few of each style (aios, pockets, etc) until you know what you like and what works for you.
They don't have a strong ammonia smell, just smells like pee (which does have an ammonia smell to it I guess). If I have a front-loader, how do I have it soak overnight? (I know every machine has different settings but maybe there is a basic setting?) I haven't tried bleaching yet, would that help?
Bleach is a last-resort IMO. It can damage or fade your diapers if they're bleached too often, and I rinse them a million times any time I have bleached because I don't want it to touch DS's skin.
I the smell isn't ammonia or farm animal-y, then I think stripping once should do the trick!
Ditto LadyE on the stripping. Or if you use RockinGreen, you could try rocking a soak and seeing if that will do the trick. I had a slight smell issue when we were in our apt, so I would regularly soak and it seemed to take care of things.
Is the smell there all the time, or when you have pee to deal with?
MrsC, it's not that hard. I went back to work for a month, used sposies at daycare, and CDs when we were home, and it still saved $, etc. And I never had blowouts, which were an almost daily occurrence when she was at daycare. I never had an issue with washing, and ::knock wood:: I've never had to strip a diaper. There was a learning curve, but it didn't last long
Our little Irish rose came to us on March 5, 2010
Don't drink the water.

That makes me feel better.
Thank you all for the advice so far!
All of this. I have found the Dawn to work really, really well.
I just found out you can soak in a front loader by hitting the "pause" button. I have not tried this yet.
Thank you!! I did two warm rinses then a hot heavy wash with extra hot water added in then two cold rinses. I didn't soak it overnight and so far they smell so much better! I haven't smelled the inserts yet but DH did when he put them in the dryer and told me they were better. I was preparing myself to do the overnight soak if it wasn't working by the time I went to bed.
So thank you again!
Mesa, I have found that if I have a case of the stinkaroos, I add a HUGE bowl of water to the washing machine between the rinse and wash cycle. It helps create more water. That's the downside to front loaders...they use less water- so stuff just does not get as clean, IMO.Despite what everyone says. My diapers are proof.
Totally agree- DH always yells at me when I add too many clothes to a load of laundry. I thought I was being smart by buying a FL machine but next time, probably will skip that! I did 2 kettles of boiling water. I was too nervous to boil and try to pour anything besides a kettle!
Yay for getting your stink out Mesa!
Mrs C you can totally manage it.
