Re: Oscar Nominees
Why can't Ryan Gosling get any respect? I loved his performance in Drive and The Ides of March. He's the only one I feel is missing from this list.
Ryan Gosling WAS excellent in Ides of March. Haven't seen Drive yet, but it's on our list.
I'm glad that Viola Davis got the nomination for best actress, but I'm surprised to see The Help up for Best Picture. Aside from the acting from the maids, I didn't think it was all that great (the book was much better).
oh dang, you're right. that's a snub.
Completely agree.
I was really surprised she didn't. Everyone was buzzing about her being a front runner.
I really need to see this movie, because I was shocked when everyone was buzzing that she was a front runner since all I have seen her in is Secret Life of the American Teenager and she is awful on that show!
I know really!!? Titantic, Departed, Aviator, J, Edgar- what else do they want him to do?
I will admit I have not seen a lot of these movies, I did see Hugo- and it deserves all the noms, but I have to kinda scratch my head at some of these- I feel like nothing really stood out this year. In years past I remember certain movies really standing out and being like- that's an oscar movie, or that's an oscar winning performance. Even if I hadn't see it- everyone was buzzing about some movie or some actor.
I was kinda surprised this year with no Shailene Woodley, Michael Fassbender, Albert Brooks, Ryan Gosling, etc.
Good for Melissa McCarthy though.
And Extremely Loud & Incredibly Close for Best Picture? WTH?
ETA: Oh yeah, and Jonah Hill??? I haven't seen Moneyball, but is he really Oscar-worthy in that movie?
Hill was very good in Moneyball. No idea whether it was the best supporting actor of the year, by it was good.
The Artist is definitely the best movie I've seen of the year. I'm going to try to watch as many nominees as I can.
I agree from what I've seen so far this year wasn't much for movies. Nothing has been nearly as good as Slumdog Millionaire or The Departed which were recent winners but overall not as godawful as Crash so that is good.
I totally agree! I love Leo and one of these days he better get an Oscar -- he's just too talented. I'm also surprised about Fassbender. But I'm so happy that the lead actor from A Better Life got a nod -- he was amazing in that film. I'm upset about Shailene Woodley too -- she was so great in the Descendants. All in all, though, I'm very much looking forward to the awards!
I'm a little underwhelmed by the Best Picture nominees but to be fair, I didn't see some of the films.
The only nominations that made me smile was Demi?n Bichir in "A Better Life" for Best Actor and Kung Fu Panda 2, which Gary Oldman was excellent in. lol
Blog: Call Me Imelda
What's the deal with being so conservative with nominations? Only 9 best picture nominees, instead of 10? Only two songs? Seems odd.
I'm also surprised that TinTin got left out. I thought it was everything an animated feature should be. I definitely don't get the love for "Midnight in Paris." I thought it was watchable, but not Oscar-worthy in any respect.
Interesting about Morris Lessmore...was it a short film before it was an app, or vice versa? I just know about it because we downloaded it for my kid to play with.
Ok, for Ryan Gosling to be omitted for Drive, Ides of March, heck even the romantic one is a total snub. Especially when a VERY average performance by Brad Pitt & Jonah Hill are included for Moneyball, which was a very average movie.
I love all of them, but that seems weird.
Charlize and Ryan can pout in a corner together.
I'm happy re Jonah Hill, and Moneyball rocks.
I love Midnight in Paris. Haters can suck it.
Go, George!
I've only seen two Best Picture noms so far and I didn't like either one. (The Help and War Horse). I was surprised that The Iron Lady wasn't nominated for Best Picture. We really like it. I'm also surprised but happy to see Rooney Mara got a nod. I thought they'd let her slide..
I felt bad that Leonardo DiCaprio was snubbed, but I liked Demian Bichir in Weeds, so...
Deciding between Viola and Meryl is going to be the hardest category besides the little-known categories where I end up picking based on very weird things. (like a film connected with Rory Kennedy couldn't win last year because she's cursed)
The reason why there were 9 nominees instead of 10 is because the nominated movies had to get 5% of the #1 votes. (Best Pic is done by a preferential voting method.) There could've been anywhere between 5 and 10 nominees.
EL&IC was a shock for best pic since it had gotten some bad reviews.
I'm not overly surprised by anything, maybe the inclusion of Rooney Mara and the lack of Michael Fassbender. I'm not a Leo lover by any means, so I wasn't sad to see him not there.
I'm a little surprised by the above comment about The Iron Lady. I think if you took Meryl Streep out and put in a different performance, it would highlight the mess that the rest of that movie is. She was mesmerizing though.
Very happy that there was some comedic recognition this year, even if the chance of winning is so slim. Oh, and I was surprised that neither of the Toy Story shorts was nominated.
And please let Jason Segel perform Man or Muppet on the show!
my read shelf:
I also really loved Jim Broadbent in The Iron Lady too. It had a lot of similarities to The King's Speech, I think but didn't have The King's Speech humor and amusement.
I agree that I'd love to see Jason Segal perform!
Just watched Tree of Life--man was that a pile of crap! I'm amazed at how bad it was. DH and I vote it worst movie we've seen since The Informant.
