**ColleenS629** - re: Excellence Resorts

I saw in the AI post  you mentioned the Excellence resorts.  In addition to a Karisma resort my sister also recommended the Excellence Riviera Cancun.  I am looking at the site today and wondering if you can tell me if upgrading from a regular Junior Oceanview Suite to an Excellence Club Oceanfront room (one category up) is worth it?  It sounds like you do get preferential things with the Excellence Club but is it worth it?  Is this the one you went to in Mexico?  How is the food?  Is it easy to get a seat by the pool/beach?

  • That's the one we went to in Mexico. When we booked, the travel agent called it Riviera Maya but the stuff we got there said Riviera Cancun, I believe. We never upgraded to the club. From what I know about it, there is a club reception area type thing that has round the clock snacks but you can go to the restaurants any time you want or order room service regardless of your room category so I didn't really see the appeal there. If I remember correctly, there is a buffet, a grill, and a pizza place open for lunch daily (all 10 or 11 are open for dinner but one is close each night on a rotating basis I think). You can also order from the grill at the pool bar or around the pool or on the beach and they would bring it to you. They had cook outs on the beach each day too in addition to the restaurant choices. There is a special section on the beach for members of the club but it is no different than the other section of the beach. Both have lounge chairs, beds, etc and they have people to bring you drinks on the beach. We also went to that area of the beach some days and no one asked us if we were club members. You get a mini bar (also included) in both rooms but I think you get a bottle of hard alcohol with the club rooms... again not a big deal for us because we just went to one of the many, many bars if we wanted liquor (they open starting at 10am... woah lol). I think you also get a beach bag, shirt, and hat with the club room but they gave that stuff to us anyway for being returning guests.

We never had a problem getting a seat at the pool or on the beach. We went in August so I don't know if there are busier times where that might be an issue. Sometimes we weren't able to get a seat in the shade by the pool but there were always multiple lounge chairs/ beds available. If we wanted the shade we would go to the beach first and go to the pool after lunch.

DH and I loved the food there. We still bring up sometimes "Oh, I'm really craving _______ from The Excellence."
