St. Helena/Napa/San Francisco area tips?

Hello! My husband and I are celebrating our first anniversary in April with a trip to San Francisco (staying in Mill Valley) and the Napa Valley area (staying in St. Helena)

We love to enjoy good food and wine--any suggestions out there on must see wineries and restaurants that you have enjoyed in those areas?

We're also open to doing outdoor activities-we are planning on checking out Muir Woods National Park.

Thank you for any suggestions!

  • After you do Muir Woods, go to Sol Food for lunch in San Rafael.  It is delicious.

  • And if you have an extra day, go do a wine tasting day/spend the night in Healdsburg.  You can walk to about a gazillion tasting rooms, and it is bunches of fun.

  • Bothe Napa Valley State Park has some good hiking and pretty views. Two food comments about St. Helena: Pizzeria Tra Vigne is a casual but still very tasty option for dinner, and I thought Gott's Roadside (formerly Taylor's Automatic Refresher) was way overpriced for what it is. I have lots of food and wine info in my blog, too.

How much are you willing to spend on a meal?

Check out Bottega, Ad Hoc, and Bouchon, all of which are located in Yountville, about 15 miles south of St. Helena.

Want to go big (*real* big)?  Try to get a reservation to The French Laundry.  They take them 2 months to the day, and getting one is a royal PITA for most people (we had our credit card concierge do it for us), but the meal is absolutely effing incredible.  One of the two best meals in my life - but be prepared to pay.  We did wine pairings and add-ons, and left the restaurant $1,500 poorer.  I'd do it again in a heartbeat, though.  There's a reason TFL was rated the #1 restaurant in the US many years in a row (Bouchon and Ad Hoc are also both Thomas Keller restaurants so you'll get great food there as well for a fraction of the price).

  • You could also visit Alcatraz island and Lombard street in San Francisco. It would be a great fun.

    Have fun!!!!

  • I love the tours (& wines) at both Clos Pegase & Sterling Vineyards.  They are in Calistoga, just a few miles north of St. Helena & are right across the street from each other.  Another one nearby to check out for the architecture/grounds is Castello di Amorosa.  I didn't really care for the wines myself (or the customer service in the tasting room), but loved the winery.

If you'll be in Yountville for any of the restaurants, our favorite is Hurley's. Also love Bouchon Bakery for morning pasteries & coffee.  Ad hoc is under renovation and is currently closed.  I think they are reopening in March, but if that's on your list you might want to check first.  We had a terrible experience at Bottega, but I know others really liked it.

Also, we did a hot air balloon ride out of Yountville and it was such a wonderful experience to float over the vineyards!  Totally worth the $ IMO.

  • Thank you everyone for all the ideas! Keep em coming if you've got more!

  • Golden Gate Bridge and Japanese Tea Garden are the must watch places when you are making plans for San Francisco. Have a nice trip.
