bummed :(

I went to go finally update for the bone marrow registry, and apparently I'll never be eligible to donate because I've had a blot clot :(.

Re: bummed :(

  • Seriously, never? o.O Is it cause it is a condition that might come back? I didn't realize that about blood clots..

  • oh bummer :(

out of curiosity, is the BM registry you had signed up for the one where you can do it IV or where they take it out with surgery?  I think it depends on the age of the recipient, but was curious whether it specifies when you sign up.  Can you post the website?

  • NEVER? that's crazy. they should make it like 10 or 15 years if they're seriously paranoid. but that sucks. i'm sorry.

    Bleeding Problems

You are not able to register if you have a serious bleeding problem such as hemophilia or Factor V Leiden, or if you have ever had a blood clot, require anticoagulant medications, have aplastic anemia, or Von Willbrand?s Disease.

yeah, I was guessing it had more to do with your health than for the sake of the recipient.  It's a bummer, but I guess it's better not to risk your life if you've already had a complication like that.  I'm sorry :(  Thanks for the info!  I always forget about this but have wanted to look into signing up.

  • I signed up a year ago - sorry to hear they won't let you, emy!

To answer your previous question, amanda - they now have a few different options for bone marrow transplants, and it depends on your body and the amount that's needed.  Now most of them are pretty much outpatient transplants - they stick an IV in one arm, draw blood, run it through a machine that separates out the marrow, and then use an IV to insert your blood back into your other arm (because you generate more marrow since you're healthy).  I think it only takes like an hour or two?  And then I think the side effects are generally pretty mild - headaches, nausea, etc.  There's also the one where they go into your hip and remove marrow - that's supposed to be much more painful but still - not a huge issue.  Definitely worth signing up if you think you're up to being a donor if called (I can't imagine how I'd feel if I was looking for a donor and someone signed up and then backed out, so maybe think about it if you're unsure)...

  • I'm sorry! I keep getting different answers if I can do it or not. I need to ask my surgeon when I go see them next month. I have been wanting to sign up for ages but no one knows.
