I went to go finally update for the bone marrow registry, and apparently I'll never be eligible to donate because I've had a blot clot

.
Re: bummed :(
oh bummer
out of curiosity, is the BM registry you had signed up for the one where you can do it IV or where they take it out with surgery? I think it depends on the age of the recipient, but was curious whether it specifies when you sign up. Can you post the website?

Bleeding Problems
You are not able to register if you have a serious bleeding problem such as hemophilia or Factor V Leiden, or if you have ever had a blood clot, require anticoagulant medications, have aplastic anemia, or Von Willbrand?s Disease.
yeah, I was guessing it had more to do with your health than for the sake of the recipient. It's a bummer, but I guess it's better not to risk your life if you've already had a complication like that. I'm sorry
Thanks for the info! I always forget about this but have wanted to look into signing up.

I signed up a year ago - sorry to hear they won't let you, emy!
To answer your previous question, amanda - they now have a few different options for bone marrow transplants, and it depends on your body and the amount that's needed. Now most of them are pretty much outpatient transplants - they stick an IV in one arm, draw blood, run it through a machine that separates out the marrow, and then use an IV to insert your blood back into your other arm (because you generate more marrow since you're healthy). I think it only takes like an hour or two? And then I think the side effects are generally pretty mild - headaches, nausea, etc. There's also the one where they go into your hip and remove marrow - that's supposed to be much more painful but still - not a huge issue. Definitely worth signing up if you think you're up to being a donor if called (I can't imagine how I'd feel if I was looking for a donor and someone signed up and then backed out, so maybe think about it if you're unsure)...
