House Related WWYD (long)

When we sat down with the sales manager to add upgrades/nail down a price for the new house, the topic of a laundry tub in the laundry room came up.  The price was like $600 for a tub which I thought was ridiculous considering you can get a tub at Home Depot for about $100.  So we declined and figured that we'd just put our own in after we moved in. She agreed that it was expensive and said that's what she would be doing too.

A few days later, it dawned on me that the $600 cost might be so expensive because it included a price for plumbing hookups. So I asked her " are the plumbing hookups included with the laundry room if we wanted to add our own later, or is that part of the $600 cost?"  She said that the plumbing hookups were included in the base price.  Great.

We sign the purchase agreement.

I start talking with babya who lives in the same neighborhood, and she says "I don't think I have a plumbing hookup for a tub".  So I start getting scared again.  I ask the sales manager AGAIN if she's sure the hookups are included and she says (for a third time now) that YES, they are included. I tell her that my friend doesn't think she has the hookup, etc. and she says "well it's probably behind her washer/dryer and she doesn't see it." O..kay.

Fast forward to yesterday.  I take my Mom out to see one of their models to see some of the finishes we've selected, and I don't see a hookup in their model laundry room.  I ask the sales manager at that model whether or not the hookups are included, and she flat out says "no, not unless you get the upgrade".  Well now wtf.

So I just wrote our sales manager an email in regards to the issue.  I'm really hoping she says "well since I told you all along that those were included, they'll be no charge" but I have a feeling it's not going to be that easy.  I'm really miffed about the situation because we were told THREE times that they were included, and now all of a sudden they're not.  We've signed the purchase agreement already so it's not like I can bargain and say "well I want the laundry tub thrown in" or else I would.  I honestly feel like they should give it to us since we've been mislead this entire time.

I would have gotten the thing anyways (if I'd known it wasn't included) but at this point it's a matter of principle. The girl has been really helpful during the whole process and I don't want to get her in trouble, but I'm irritated. If you were in my shoes, would you fight to get the thing included, or at least discounted? Am I being ridiculous?

  • I fight for much less. You are not wrong! And I agree, it's about the principle of the matter. She reassured you on three separate occasions that they were included. Don't let her screw you over!

This. You were told explicitly that they were included they should honor that even if it was incorrect.

Thank you ladies.  This makes me feel better that I'm not just being cheap.

Yep all of this. There are definitely no hookups in our laundry room, since we were told that the hookups were part of that additional cost. Not to mention, if there were hookups I'm not even sure where the tub would go based on how our layout is. Huh? Sales chick is very wrong, let her have it! and if she tells you they're included one more time, have her put it in writing for you.

  • I would absolutely fight to get it included.  Honestly, it wont cost them much in the end.  I would be very surprised if they put up much of a fight over a few hundred dollars (which is all it would probably cost them to get it plumbed for you, maybe less).

I know hindsight is 20/20, but as soon as babya said that she didn't think it was plumbed, I would have asked the sales manager to make sure that it was put down in writing...Oh well Smile  Worst comes to worst, you have to pay someone else to plumb it for you later...

  • You are not being cheap at all. You were told three times it was included, it needs to be included. End of story.  I am a biotch when it comes to things like this because where I work, if an error is made and it's our fault, I have to make it right. I expect the same in return.

I know, right?! I'm kicking myself now.

I wrote her an email and was very conversational about it.  I just threw that little bit about the laundry tub in with another email regarding our selections.  I worded the email with things like "I know you already told us it was included, but I just wanted to make sure"... "we were under the impression based on our conversations"...

I'm hoping that she writes something back that can be used if need be.  I'm sure it'll all work out fine, I'm just feeling anxious waiting to hear something back!

  • Just going through the building process myself (although with a different builder), I bet they give you a hard time about it.

We were told all along we got a finished basement included. When we sat down to do the purchase agreement, all of a sudden you got a free finished basement but not our model house.  Um... what?  So we ended up having to pay 10,000 dollars mroe than we thought.  We were NOT happy but in the end, to finish it ourselves, we would have to pay someone more than 10,000 out of pocket instead of rolled into our mortgage.

There were also little things that we ended up adding in that we thought they'd just throw in, but nope, day of closing, they had added it all together for us!  Some of the things were like adding an electrical outlet in one of our walk in closets.  It was only 100 dollars but seriously?  We just spent how much with you and you cant give us an outlet at no charge?!  It's not like we added it after the house was drywalled.... we added it when they were putting in the rest of the electrical work!

Still, even with all the annoyances... SO worth it.

Ditto this.  Get everything in writing.  Write it on the upgrade/purchase order yourself if you have to and date and initial it.  In my experience, the won't honor anything if it's not in writing.  It's a shame because you should be able to trust these people, but you can't.  Good luck.

Wow Alyssa.  I would have been livid.  I guess I should quit my whining about a stupid laundry tub then!! I'm still going to see where it gets me, but they really screwed you over with the basement.  How absurd.

  • This all stinks.  But can I ask... why do you want a wash tub?  I'm just curious. I grew up with one and had one at our B'lo house. I hated it. It would get clogged easily and they would overflow and I'd have a hell of a mess to clean up.

In our last rental and this house, no tub and I LOVE it.  Although, it does stink that we don't have a tub to wash our paint brushes and such out but I guess I'm just super careful to wash them and clean up the sink I do it in.
    Just wondering....

I like to soak clothes that have stains in them prior to washing them, so I have lots of little tubs that I can put Oxi clean in or whatever and let things sit for a while on top of the washer.  It's just more convenient to have a sink nearby to do that without having to walk halfway through the house trying not to spill a tub of water.  I probably won't wash paint brushes in it because I'm a little OCD then I'd feel like the tub was "tainted". lol!! Hell, I'd probably soak those badboys too.
