Laundry haters

I think last week there was a QOTD about the task you most want to outsource, and a lot of people said laundry. I'm wondering why people hate doing laundry so much. I don't love doing laundry, but I don't hate it nearly as much as some other people seem to hate it, so I'm curious. Doesn't the machine do 90% of the work?

1. What about doing laundry is so horrible? Is it the task itself? The sorting and folding afterward? The amount of time it takes? Something else?

2. How many loads do you do per week?

3. How much time do you think you spend doing laundry per week? I mean active time, not time when the machine is doing it's thing and you're elsewhere.

Thank you for satisfying my curiosity.

Re: Laundry haters

  • I didn't see that question, but I answer would have been bathroom cleaning. I HATE cleaning bathrooms more than anything.

    But since we're talking laundry...

    1) I don't really hate doing laundry, but I do hate that our laundry room is in the basement. Every basket/hamper has to be dragged up and down 2 flights of stairs. I hate to sound lazy, but that's just annoying! Also, it's easy to forget about when it's all the way down there.

    2) I usually do at least 2 loads per week, but some weeks I do a lot more. I do Warner's laundry every week (his wardrobe isn't that extensive), and that's at least 2 loads (light and dark). And then I do my own laundry about every 2 weeks. Then at some point I have to wash the build up a dirty towels and sheets (which I really should just do every week, but I don't).

    3) no idea...not much. But when Warner was a baby I did a load of laundry everyday, sometimes twice a day, so I probably spent at least a half hour on laundry each day.

  • For me, I don't like the folding and putting away.  So I pay the nice folks at the fluff -n-fold 90?/lb to wash, dry, and fold anything that I don't really care about like PJs, around the house clothes, and cheap workout clothes. I do this every 2-3 weeks. Then all I have to do is put it away, which takes 5 minutes (though I'll admit I have the clean stacks shoved in my closet currently.)

This leaves me only to have to wash my nicer stuff.  That usually takes 20 mins every few weeks as well.  The hubz usually does sheets and towels.

I've always hated putting clothes away, so maybe that leads to my laundry aversion.

Now, menu planning, paying bills, organizing the pantry... those are chores that I love to do.

We all have our likes/dislikes  :-)

  • 1. What about doing laundry is so horrible? Is it the task itself? The sorting and folding afterward? The amount of time it takes? Something else?  I rarely sort.  I don't mind the folding.  It is the putting away that I HATE!  I don't know why.  We have been known to "dress" out of the laundry basket (clothes folded) for a week.

    2. How many loads do you do per week?  - maybe 3 or 4.  DH takes all of his work clothes to the cleaners, so that leaves most of my clothes, bedding, towels, and his unders.

    3. How much time do you think you spend doing laundry per week? I mean active time, not time when the machine is doing it's thing and you're elsewhere.  - two hours.  I will fold while watching TV on Sat or Sun morning while DH is still asleep.

  • Adding on the kids has just made the laundry out of control.  I know it increased with DD#1 but when #2 came along it was just SO much.  I would say we do 4-5 loads per week.  In the past DH has taken on the sorting and washing while I do the folding and putting away.  This way he gets to cart it all over the house and I do the fold/put away thing that he will never do.  It is much more tolerable when we split this duty.
  • 1. What about doing laundry is so horrible? Is it the task itself? The sorting and folding afterward? The amount of time it takes? Something else?

It is a) handling the dirty clothes, especially gym clothes, b) the process of it all and c) the time it takes.

    2. How many loads do you do per week?  We have the world's dinkiest washer so we do 4+ loads a week (clothes- my work + both pjs, unders, gym, towels, sheets)

    3. How much time do you think you spend doing laundry per week? I mean active time, not time when the machine is doing it's thing and you're elsewhere.

Probably, between pre-treating and washing and changing and folding and putting away I spend 2ish hours a week.

  • It's not my most hated task, but it's not my favorite.  For whatever reason, I just dislike putting it away.  We do about 5 loads of laundry a week here.  2-3 darks, 1 light, towels and tablecloths, and finally sheets.  About every other week I do a gentle load as well and once a month I hand wash sweaters.  It's just a lot.  DH folds the clothes and sometimes he does non-stained laundry (really, his - since the kids all need to be pretreated and my shirts usually do as well).

  • i guess after a decade of going to the laundromat, having a washer & dryer in our apartment makes the task seem minimal. also, i hate folding, DH hates hanging wet clothes so we each do the thing we don't hate. in NYC, laundry took up 2+ hours/week. and if we skipped a week, it was essentially laundry hell.

  • I have a friend that hates, hates, hates doing laundry.  She lives in an apt complex so she has to go outside her apt, down to the basement (2 levels down) to do it.  She puts it off to the last minute and then rationalizes that she should only do clothes people see (and bras).  She then proceeds to buy packages (sealed) of new underwear.  This way she only needs to do laundry every 2.5 - 3 weeks.

At last count she had about 150 pairs of unders.....

  • 1. What about doing laundry is so horrible? Is it the task itself? The sorting and folding afterward? The amount of time it takes? Something else?

I am not one of the laundry haters (because, really, it is one of two household chores I am responsible for so if I b*tched about it, I would be super lame). I do not like the folding and putting away. Also, I like my socks knotted together and I feel like we have a lot of socks in our house and there always seems to be one missing.

    2. How many loads do you do per week?

At least 7. I did 4 loads on Sunday and I think I need to do at least one tonight. I am always baffled how two adults and one kid can have so much laundry.

    3. How much time do you think you spend doing laundry per week? I mean active time, not time when the machine is doing it's thing and you're elsewhere.

Probably an hour? 10 minutes to fold each load?

I may or may not have a similar amount of underwear.  I wash them.  I just got tired of doing laundry all the time, so I have a LOT of underwear and bras.  Since I've gained weight and nothing fits, it is killing me to have such a limited supply of comfy bras and undies.  But I hope to lose the weight soon so I'm not buying more than I have to.  Still I probably have about as many bras and panties that actually fit -- not including the 150 or so that don't -- as most people have total.

  • 1. What about doing laundry is so horrible? Is it the task itself? The sorting and folding afterward? The amount of time it takes? Something else? It's the start-to-finish amount of time that it takes along with the intermediate steps and the fact that it cuts into my day because I can't go anywhere during that window (I like to get the clothes right out of the dryer). Also, for me, it's a lot of going up and down stairs. But overall, I don't mind it too much.
    2. How many loads do you do per week? 3-4 every other week. DH does the laundry on my off week.
    3. How much time do you think you spend doing laundry per week? I mean active time, not time when the machine is doing it's thing and you're elsewhere. It's probably 1-1.5 hours of active time but over a 4 hour span. On a side note, when DH and I first got married, we put all of our laundry in one hamper in the master bedroom and took turns doing the laundry. However, this started to create problems in our marriage based on a variety of factors so we went back to each doing our own laundry.  More recently, I was doing all of the laundry for the kids every weekend which took a few hours and multiple trips to the basement. Every time I would go into the basement, DH would say "You are always disappearing. What are you doing? You just disappear and leave me with the kids." I mean, it wasn't like I was down there getting a massage, drinking some wine and being pampered. So, I decided that this system was no longer going to work and I basically said that it makes more sense if we swap each weekend. So, now DH does the kids laundry every other week and complains about how long it takes. My response is "now you know what I was disappearing to do!" Needless to say, laundry has been a hot topic in our house but I think we now have a good system in place.

It is amazing how quickly it adds up.  I just went through my underwear / sock drawers and threw stuff away or put things in the donation pile (socks, not unders).  I panicked when I realized I only had about 20 pairs of unders.  Went shopping yesterday for unrelated items, but ended up finding about 10 on clearance at Kohl's....

  • Laundry is my favorite of the chores.

Dishes is my least favorite because we dont have a garbage disposal and we dont have a dishwasher.

  • My answer had been for outdoor chores.

Laundry doesn't really bother me.  I usually end up watching t.v. while I'm folding clothing and on average we do between 4 and 5 loads (whites, blacks/greys, blue, pink/red, towels/linens)

I'm with you Wines. I don't mind doing laundry at all, honestly. Now cleaning the bathroom.... that's another story. Perhaps I can strike a deal with some nestie that I'll do your laundry if you come clean my bathrooms from top to bottom weekly. :)

HA!  Now, I hate laundry, but kind of like cleaning bathrooms.  I guess "like" is a strong word...but, it's rewarding to get toothpaste flecks off the mirror!  Now, my bathrooms are kind of piggish right now... LOL.

I hate, hate, hate laundry.  It's the putting it away part.  I think the hate of laundry really stems from lack of a clothes management system.  Our closets suck, and we don't have many drawers.  We do the laundry, and leave it in a pile on the guest bed all week, taking our clothes from there.  :)
