Ear infections are the devil.

We went for Nora's ear "recheck" appt this morning and found that not only does she still have an ear infection in her right ear, but now she has one in her left ear, too. And apparently "bad" infections. Double whammy.

She was already on the Omnicef, which is supposed to be the "strong" antibiotic and it didn't work, so... they had to give her injectable antibiotics. I am so sick to my stomach over the situation. We have to go back tomorrow for them to look at and evaluate whether the ear looks any better, then receive round 2 of the injectable antibiotics if necessary. Repeat on Wednesday for possible day 3.

On the (sort of) bright side, we have the ENT referral now, and we got an appointment for next Weds 2/1. I guess I am just angry because if they had given us the referral when we saw the pedi two weeks ago, we could've been at the ENT by now, not giving my kid double shots of super strong antibiotics in her thighs.

Our normal pedi is STILL out on medical leave, so this whole experience has just sucked.

  • sorry that does suck.  I hope the ENT has answers for you.

  • So sorry. :-(

Have you thought about chiropractic care? I don't know, maybe it's too late for that too.

  • I did think about chiropractic care, and even looked into it, Jenn--but sadly, 1) it's expensive when you add it up over time (not covered by our insurance), and 2) there's not one convenient to our work/home, so we'd have to drive her across town for appointments once a week at first, then (hopefully) tapering off. Even so, it's really hard for both of us as we work full-time, so it just doesn't seem to be a realistic solution for us. I don't ever want to say that we're choosing our child's care based on convenience, but... I guess we kind of are. :( We just can't afford to be taking that much time away from work on a regular basis. It's been bad enough having to go to all of these doc appointments, and that's five minutes from where we work!

There are a whole host of other things that are causing us to lean in this direction (including my mom's life-long problems with her ears), but it's still been a really difficult decision for me. I know that in the grand scheme of things, tubes (assuming she does end up with them) are not that big of a deal, but I just didn't want it to come to this.

Ugh! I hate that insurance doesn't cover chiropractic care. We are lucky enough to have it covered, so I forget others don't. :-(

And, just so you know, I wasn't trying to suggest that your route is the wrong route. We all make decisions based on a variety of things and do what we ultimately feel is best. I've never been in your situation, so I can't say what I'd do.

  • I know the feeling...Cullen has had 3 already and he is only 7 months old!

  • Jenn--Oh, I know! It's me waffling and questioning my own decisions. I didn't mean to come off defensive (if I did).

Jessica--That sucks. That was about where we were when Nora was 7 months. I hope things improve for you guys, though, and that you don't have to head down this same road!

  • Poor little baby!!!  I hope she can get a definitive diagnosis/medicine soon.

  • We had to do the Rocefin shots too. It does suck. I'm sorry you're having to do this too, but our pedi won't even refer to the ENT until you do the Rocefin shots. Even though Landon has tubes, he's already had the right one blocked and another infection. Ugh.

I hope she feels better soon!
