Bamberg or Nuremberg?

We're going to Germany and looking to stay somewhere between Munich and Berlin for 2 nights.  We'll have almost 2 full days.

We had originally planned on Rothenburg ob der Tauber, but then I stumbled on these less touristy cities which interest us more and seem a little easier to get to from Munich.

If you've been to both, which did you prefer?  They appear to be less than an hour apart by train.  Is it unrealistic to stay in one and do a day trip to the other with this short amount of time?

I was leaning toward Bamberg because it's quaint and well preserved, and we'd like to take it easy after Munich and before sight-seeing in Berlin.  I keep reading great things about Nuremberg also, but I'm not sure if 2 days is enough to do it justice.

Re: Bamberg or Nuremberg?

  • Not too much advise here. I went to Nuremberg as a day trip by car from Munich with some co-workers. We saw Nuremberg by foot though once we arrived. We loved it. There was a lot to do and the medieval town was wonderful. I recommend Nuremberg but have not been to Bamberg.
  • Thanks for the input!

I was leaning toward staying in Bamberg, but pictures of Nuremberg look beautiful and there seems to be more to do there.  Knowing that you did it as a day trip makes me think it might be worth it to visit both, even if just for a short time.

  • I have been to both cities and would pick Bamberg.
  • I loved Bavaria and the history in Nuremberg (depressing but...) it is a nice little town not sure I would spend 2 days there.

My heart is as open as the sky.
