what would you want for your birthday? H's niece's bday party is this weekend and I don't know what to get that doesn't involve pink, sparkles or Disney Princesses.
Something a little educational would be preferable.
TIA!
ETA: I've been toying with an idea to bring up to H, but I won't if you guys think it's lame.
I wanted to open a bank account for her and deposit some money in to it every birthday and christmas till she turns 21. Then at that point that money she can take that money and travel. Travel is a pretty important thing to her parents too.
I could get something small for her to open during parties, but what do you think? Also, this is the niece that we'll get in case anything ever happens to H's brother, so I feel a little more responsible for her. On the flip side H has 12 other nieces and nephews that we aren't doing this for, so we're kind of playing favorites...
Thoughts?
Re: If you were turning 4 years old... (now with an ETA idea)
DD (get, not throw)
I have no idea!
What about those (if they still make them) big posters with black felt so it's easy to stay in the lines with fun markers?
My cousin got her nephew (5yrs old) play dough for christmas and he's having blast with it.
Do they still make the play dough fun factory? I loved that thing.
i LOVE the idea of opening an acct for her.. and why does anyone have to know that you've opened it? we've thought about doing that for our nephews that live over here, i have 4 others.. but we never see those ones.. but i decided against it because i'm going to have kids and i'd rather save for my children.. yes, maybe selfish.. but smart imo. and since you'll get her if her parents pass.. i think it's a smart move.
since you're not having kids, do whatever you want!
This is what I'm afraid of with his other siblings.
I just don't know if im being paranoid, but i wonder if it's going to be super obvious that some time after she graduates college then she gets to take to take a big trip.
sorry to slam your bank account idea--but i tried this. won't happen.
unless you do it under your own name. i've tried this, but the banks don't allow it unless you're a parent or legal guardian (tax purposes). i told chase, bofa, and becu that the parents are irresponsible and will not/cannot be on the bank accounts, and i want to do it for the kids...they said i can get a court order........ all 3 of them said that..
it makes me really sad because i want my brothers child to go to college, but i do not trust opening a bank account with my brothers name on it....i think we will open one with our own name on it (pay taxes on it), and give it to his son when college comes.
as for "what would i want if i was 4 years old?" a pony. duh.
when my niece was young enough, i used to go to the craft aisle, and get her the "make your own bracelets" style gifts. she really liked those......i think.

jumped ship to the new and improved nest. back to TB for baby boards.
i think you should just do it under your name knowing it is for her. you're her god parents? or just written in the will that you'll take them if anything happens?
i would probably be sad if my parents or grandparents had accounts for one of the grandkids and not the other.. but not in this situation.
Open the account in your name to bypass the hassles. I think that's a lovely idea, but then I wish we had the money to travel! But, I know the trips I was able to take at 17 and 21 were life-changing.
As for gifts to open, I'm always a fan of craft stuff. The fuzzy felt posters are still cool, and I sent a gift to my friend's child that the little girl just L-O-V-E-D: it's a coloring book of "stained glass" images. The pages are vellum with black printed on it, you color it with markers or colored pencils and then can tape to a window and the light shines through it. I liked them when I was little and my friend's girl proved they're still just as cool. Bonus, you can get them in a ton of different styles so you don't have to get "girly" fairies or whatever.
Or...if you decide to go ahead with the bank account, since this would be the first birthday deposit, you could give her a travel-themed DVD like Madeleine or something.
