No, she was the one that wanted to know how to not have her ILs judge her for "accidentally" producing another mouth for them to feed.

advice about breaking baby news to in-laws

My husband and I have two children, son who'll be 3 in Feb, Daughter who'll be 1 in March. We were planning on having a third child when our DD would be 2 or 3 but we got a surprise, I'm 9 wks pregnant and my IL, specifically the women, are of the opinion that the only thing to use is contraseptives and all (3 SIL and MIL) have had thier tubes tied after having thier children (all before the age of 40). And were big into asking me if my husband and I are having more kids and if we're doing anything in between to keep it from happening. My fam is dif on the issue all of my fam's women have used the ovulation method or cycle method and there's 3 years(give or take) in between me and my three siblings. We used that successfully between our first two. Tho other thing w/ having another baby now is we are still having some hard financial times, where we had rent my ILs guest house and we have a small car and no money to buy a mini van now to haul 3 kids. My fam sees it as if God at this time is allowing you to have another baby then He will also provide for that baby as well. I'm not sure how to tell his fam and so far we're waiting till I'm 3 mos, by then there'll be no denying it. Any advice on how to best approach this, wanting not to cause any disrupt between us?

    Hi!  I'm pregnant.

Really, that's about all you need to say.  Why is either side of your family all up your reproductive organs?  And why are you letting them?  How many children you have and when you have them is between you, your husband and your doctor and that's it.  Tell them to eff off if they have a problem.

Seriously, people. If your faith in humanity is destroyed because your parents told you there was a Santa Claus and as it turns out there is no Santa Claus, you are an ignorant, hypersensitive cry baby with absolutely zero perspective. - UnderwaterRhymes

Wow yeah, I agree w/ sprky. I'd tell them nothing except that you are pregnant and if they insisted on asking you about your BC methods or prevention for the future, I'd tell them it's not their business.

Why not forget the explaining and just telling them that you're pregnant.

The thing is, you're pregnant because using the cycle method didn't work or you weren't cautious enough and so now you'll have to make it work with what you have.  It sounds like it will be a struggle but people worse off than  you have had babies and made it work for them.  You don't need a mini van to have 3 kids, my brothers and I fit fine in the back of a suzuki swift (not even a 4 door).  You don't need to explain this to anyone.  Just tell them that you're pregnant and that you're excited. If they ask if you had planned it you can tell them it was a surprise.  It really doesn't matter, either way a baby is coming. What are you afraid they're going to say?

"Guess what, we're having another baby!"

And ditto what sprky79 said. Your reproduction, in all shapes and forms, is not their business.

You're overthinking it. You're pregnant, congratulations!

And let DH announce it when you're not in the room, so everybody doesn't have to feel embarrassed by an awkward silence or expression. Let it sink in a bit so they can pull themselves together when they see you.

And yes, it might mean you need more help than you wanted to accept (or they wanted to give) but its a new baby in the family, people will rise to the occassion.

My darling daughter just turned 4 years old.

  • People should post their entire life story before asking the bottom line question they have. Otherwise, it is spun out of control with lots of ASSumptions.

Bottom line ... your body ... your choice on how you 'prevent' pregnancy ... not anyone else's ... you're pregnant - no going back. You announce it like you would if this was your first timed pregnancy.

And yes ... other BC methods do fail but they do not have as high of a failure rate as just tracking a cycle. So if you don't want another baby a year after this one then you might consider being a bit more educated about BC.
  • Yeah, I noticed earlier too. Too bad.

  • Nice catch!
  • I have to ask. What does "DD" mean in this situation? I know that is usually means Darling Daughter/Dear Daughter. But I'm clueless with this one haha!
  • Dirty Delete. It's when someone posts something, dont' like what they're being told, then delete.
