I need inspiration re: Big Bro shirt

I'm making my own, obviously, but I need help deciding on a fabric for the letters. Something boyish, a kind of small print (going on a size 5T shirt). Any suggestions? I'm not super picky on price since I'm going to keep this shirt foreva (no really, I will) but I'd like to keep it under $9/yard (I won't need more than quarter of a yard, half at most if that's the smallest I can buy it). Not sure what color shirt it's going to go on since shirts without pockets for little boys that aren't plastered with cars are kind of hard to find (pockets are no match for me), so I'm not limited to any color pallette.

I didn't realize how HARD it would be to pick out this fabric. I've looked in my stash and on etsy for a few days and I still can't make a decision.

  • Your 5 year old is in a 5T shirt? OMG my kid is a giant. He is in a 5T in most brands at 3.

HAHAH. He is a petite little thing. 9% in height. But I'm only 5ft1 so it's not a surprise.

LOVE that second one. He's obsessed with cars. When does that one come out?

Those are cute too, but I'm worried about if they'd be "readable" when cut out and appliqued. I really want an excuse to buy the trike one.

I think it comes out in March. It is adorable, though. I love it.  You can sign up to notified when Fat Quarter Shop gets it in http://www.fatquartershop.com/store/stores_app/Browse_dept_items.asp?T=1&Store_id=499&page_id=17

  • No suggestions on the fabric- BUT- take a seam ripper and be reasonably careful- pockets come off SO easily, and on knits, you'd never know better once it's washed and dried. I do it all the time- I hate pockets on little boy shirts, and I pulled some of those insanely stupid dinky miniature pockets off some of my tees.

I think you'd be fine readable with the trikes on a baby blue shirt with white applique thread.

Oh I know, those pockets are no match for me and my seam ripper. I just have a hard time finding ANY shirts without graphics on them already. Wal-Mart is usually hit or miss and they're remodeling the closest Target, so I'm avoiding that place. Thank goodness I'm going to the city this Friday! :D

The best place I've found for them is Michaels.  They have plain colors, and I don't think there are any pockets.

But how small do they go? I can get one at Wal-Mart for $3.88 and take a pocket off. It's sad, to a point I'm too lazy and then, I'm too cheap. I'd rather save $2 and take a pocket off lol.

Thanks for the input girls. :)
