IRS troubles :(

WOW....it just keeps getting better....

we received a letter saying we effed up our 2009 return and owe a large sum of $$$ with pretty big interest and penalties.  after some research, our accountant figures out it was a typo on his part.

so we do indeed owe this...

they are willing to accept payment in full (includung interest and penalties to date)

a payment plan with a minimum of $25 a month FOREVER (of course while accruing int & pen)

my point in all of this is the tax man from the IRS asked me did we ever sign a "peace of mind clause" or does the accountant have "insurance".  my answer is no.  so basically, an h&r block type of place would have covered this.

when you look at the return, the accountant signs it w/ his id# but then we signed it as well.

just some food for thought  :::BANGING MY HEAD AGAINST MY DESK:::

Re: IRS troubles :(

  • oh and my dad was insisting if we pay in full they will waive int & pen....apparently not...he said congress passed something saying int & pen are mandatory on all past amounts 9although i cant seem to find that online)

  • I'm so sorry you are going through this Anna.  That really sucks.  I have no experience with this kind of stuff, but since I have to hire an accountant this year due to my job change, this is helpful info about the "insurance" part.  I would have never known to ask.
  • Sorry you're going through this Anna.  I had issues with ID theft and my tax return a few years ago and it took almost 1.5 years to get it all straightened out...but luckily we didn't owe them at the end.  Good luck - it can be painful dealing with the IRS!

  • I hate to say this you may be *** out of luck. we actually fucked up with the first time home owners credit we weren't suppose to get it. no idea until the letter came saying we owed over 8k. we knew we were paying it back anway this year but didn't want to pay the extra 1000. there is nothing you can do.

they actually wound up telling us we were a glitch and we did deserve it (we actually didn't) but we are just paying it back in full this tax season and being done and hopefully they don't realize the mistake AGAIN.

  • So sorry to ear this - seems terribly unfair. Good luck getting it sorted out and tell your accountant he owes you a good few years of free returns... if you still feel comfortable using him at all that is.
