Mattress help

We need one, yo. And I'm old, so my back hurts a lot. We're kinda debating between a conventional and a tempurpedic.

Here are my tempurpedic pros/cons:

PROS:

Awesomely comfy, last a long time

CONS: Pricey, awkward to bone in, sometimes hot or smelly when new

Can you help? Anything to add? Do you love/hate your mattress?

Re: Mattress help

  • I have a tempurpedic, and I love it.  I sleep so well, and my H doesn't have back pain anymore.  It's pricey, but to me totally worth it.  It smelled when we first got it, but it went away fairly quickly, so I wouldn't let that turn you off. It can create something of a...leverage problem whilst boning, but there are lots of places to bone in my house, and only one place where I sleep.

  • Which model did you get? There are so many at such different price points.

  • I don't remember which model.  It's about 5 years old, and there are a lot more choices now than there were then.  We just had to pick whether we wanted adjustable or not (we picked not), and then there were like 3 levels of awesomeness to pick from, and we got the middle one.

  • You should get one like my in-laws have with Magic Fingers. You can tell your guests about it over dinner. Start by asking if they like vibrators, then go on about how wonderful you think vibrators are. After they somehow manage to keep a straight face through the meal, come into their room while they're resting and turn it on for them without warning.

    Still mortified.

(but it was a very comfy bed other than the "vibrator")

Sometimes I wonder if scientists have never seen a sci-fi movie before. "Oh yes, let's create a super species of deer. NOTHING COULD POSSIBLY GO WRONG." I wonder if State Farm offers a Zombie Deer Attack policy. -CaliopeSpidrman
  • My husband is 147292 degrees when he sleeps and we bought a latex bed last year and it's been the best thing ever. It's similar to a temperepedic (sp?) but instead of sinking all the way in, it molds to your body so you don't get hot. Ryan had never had a night sleep without sweating until we got it.  We also got latex pillows "for free" and they are lovely.

  • We were worried about boning and tempurpedic beds. then we bought a tempurpedic and discovered all that time we spent worrying was wasted and should have been spent boning without back pain.

  • We have a pillowtop and I love it.

  • We have the classic base model Tempurpedic, and it's wonderful.  And we haven't had any trouble with boning on it; if we can do it on a Tempurpedic with no mishaps, as sexually retarded as we are, then you'll be fine.

  • I want one of those Sleep Number beds like whoa.  Anyone have one of those?

We thought about a tempurpedic mattress, but someone said they're hot as hades, and we don't need any more help in the night sweats department.  Right now we have a memory foam pillow top.  It was marvelous when we first got it, but we're both waking up with stiffness and pain and soreness that we never had before.  I know we're getting older and junk, but unless we're doing some serious acrobatics in our sleep and not realizing it, there's no reason to be in this much pain every damn day.

My parents have one and they looove it. Especially because my dad likes his side super soft and my mom likes her's really firm. I'll vouch that it's super comfy. Their only negatives are:

    a.  it's a little noisy to increase the firmness, so you wouldn't really want to do it if the other person is sleeping.

    b. if you're sleeping in the bed alone and there's a little ridge between the two sides even if you have them set at the same number.

  • We looked at a sleep number when we bought the tempurpedic (our house is weird, so we needed a bed with no springs, so we could get it upstairs).  We got scared away by all of the reports of black mold growing in them.
