Lord, beer me the strength.

(If you watch The Office, you'll get the reference)

Last night my younger dog had a seizure. It was horrible.  We went to the e-vet and this morning all is well again.  But, i'm on edge, i'm upset, DH is away and i'm just weepy today.

Then, I get to work, and my boss informs me he'd like to meet with me today for my annual review.  A little more notice than a couple hours would have been nice.

I know i'm going to cry.  I know he knows I hate it here.  My attitude has changed and it clearly shows.

Ugh Crying

I completely understand this.  I actually just quit my job because my boss could tell I was unhappy and basically told me she only wanted someone who was going to love the job.  I felt like I was being pushed out.  I sincerely hope things turn out okay for you.

  • I'm so sorry you had to go through that with your dog, but I am glad he is doing okay now!  We have an injured dog at home ourselves (they thought her leg was sprained, but are taking her back to the vet today for another exam), and it is really heartbreaking when you don't know what is wrong or how to help.  I would not be at all happy if my boss wanted me to do a review during such a stressful time.  Could you explain to him that you're having a bad day and ask to postpone until tomorrow at the earliest?

I thought about asking to have it moved, but a really big part of me just wants to get it over with, go home, cry like a baby and open too many bottles of wine.

  • I'm sorry about your dog. :(

Re your annual review:  Are you actively looking for another job? If not, maybe this can be a good reminder to start.

i totally get that too. what are you looking for? would you like me to PM you my agency info? they have a lot of marketing/communications/PR stuff. they were really good about sending me listings that were actually a good fit (unlike some of my other agencies). between hating my job in NYC then moving here, i was actively job hunting for like four years so trust me, i feel your pain. good luck today. definitely crack open a bottle of wine (or three) tonight.

    To FU up this:

What are you wanting to do?

Cast out your Nestie Network Net!!  Maybe someone knows someone who knows someone who needs you!  Or knows of some other connection that might help you out.

That's the problem.  All the jobs I "qualify" for - don't pay what my current job pays, and we really don't want to take a pay cut right now.  It DH gets promoted, yes, I could settle for something (anything) other than where I am now.

I've been applying mostly to administrative and research assistant jobs.  Most recently I found [what I thought was] the perfect match for me (administrative assistant at the holocaust museum) but i'm still waiting to hear back, it's going on 3 months I think.  The job status in my account says "reviewing applications"... so i'm still holding out hope.

Ideally I would like to work in a museum of some sort (preferably one that has to do with history, since that's my background) and do research or even educational programs.

Thanks guys. I'm a hot mess today. lol

  • There's an admin/support services position open in the bureau of the agency I work for.  It's a GS-9 and is probably not the most exciting position in the world, but it might be less miserable than where you work now.  Let me know if you want me to PM you the link to the opening.

  • Would you be interested in working for an association that supports museums?

Hope it gets better!  Maybe your boss will be less of a douche if you cry?

This is a good point.  Often it is easier to get a job w/in the federal gov if you are already a fed.  Are the museums (smithsonians, holocaust, etc) considered part of the fed gov't?

if so, you may want to expand your net to general fed jobs & then still look for museum positions while you're working.

  • Glad your doggie's OK now - sorry you had to go through a scare like that (especially without your DH). I hope your review is over by now and you're toasting the end of the day soon!

  • Thanks guys.  I means a lot!

My review was super lame.  All we talked about was now i'll be getting paid sick days now. yippee.  But whatever - it's over.  Part of me thinks he didn't bring up my sour attitude is because he knows if he pushes one more button i'm out the door and he really needs my help. lol

I'll entertain any job opening, at this point.  I know it's bad to say that, but it's the truth right now.  What I want to do seems unattainable right now, and i'm not sure what i'd rather do in the meantime, if you know what i mean. Well, I know it's definitely not working for the douche canoe I work for right now. lol

  • No, I feel you for real.  I'm glad the review went OK. In honor of it, you should take a sick day tomorrow.  LOL!

Are there opportunities out there that might make you a more attractive candidate for your dream job that you can be exploring now while you're waiting for an opening? Would, for example, being a volunteer docent help? Or is there any organizations (like professional associations or similar) that would be beneficial? Or maybe any other volunteer work that would be quasi-related to your training & ambitions to make you stand out as a candidate?  In addition to experience & forging connections, it would probably also be fun since it's something you're passionate about.

  • If you could do part-time, I know of a  contract position in a museum that the hiring manager has asked me to suggest candidates for. Museums are my background and even though I'm not working in a museum, I use a lot of my public program skills and work with a lot of area museums on projects (big and small).

How about this-- you work in Kensington/Rockville, right? The next time I'm working from home (sometime next week), let's grab lunch and talk. I'm happy to look over your resume and offer some advice. I might also be able to suggest some good alternate paths (like mine, lol).
