This made me LOL

Keeping in mind....my husband's parents, one year into his higher education, renegged on their deal to pay for it.  This resulted in me having to take out some student loans, wipe out my nest egg, yada yada.  They proceeded, the rest of his time in school, to be very unsupportive.

Yesterday, his sister, who he has barely spoken to in three years because she, well, sucks, emailed him needing him to perform some legal services for her.  I nearly gave myself a hernia laughing.  (Also, her explanation of needing the services didn't make any sense, and we put two and two together that she had lied on an application, then got busted when the background check came back).

I told him his response should be "Sure, my cost is $xxx an hour, I have to pay back those student loans you know." He claims this is not a good idea.

Thoughts?

Re: This made me LOL

  • I'd be frustrated if anyone only contacted me to use me, but what does the sister have to do with the parents reneging?

She has nothing to do with the renegging. There is no doubt his response will end up in his parent's "in" box though.

However, she has everything to do with his argument with his parents, in that, the argument started because she was constantly using us to wipe her @ss but was never available to help us out.

I can't imagine treating a sibling as she has treated him, then expect free help.

  • He should offer her a referral to a good lawyer and be done with it.

    Yes

Agreed.  There is absolutely nothing wrong with explaining to her that business and personal must remain separate.

Then he should send her a really formal sounding response that amounts to stop lying and you have no recourse because you caused this.

This is what makes the situation even funnier, she wants him to help but has lied about what she did to get herself in the predictament that she is in.

He can tell her he'll help, then do everything he can to totally screw it up for her, even worse than she did by herself.
