We are headed to Steamboat next month with our 9month old DD. We are torn about whether or not to rent a car. Our contact at our rental agency, said the mountain is walkable from the townhouse we are renting and that there is a private shuttle that makes a loop of the mountain resort and downtown area plus the city shuttle which runs the same route and both shuttles run frequently.
Has anyone been to Steamboat and can give me an idea of whether or not we would need a car with a small child traveling with us? The shuttle makes me nervous as I don't know how it would work with DD's car seat. We don't plan on going downtown a lot, but I think we'll head there at least once or twice.
Re: Steamboat, Car Rental & a Baby
When we were in Steamboat a few years ago, our place had shuttle service and was technically in walking distance to a lot of things, but we found it a lot more convenient to rent a car. But we went out to Strawberry Park hot springs and some other places not on the shuttle route.
I'd be inclined to just go for the car if you're traveling with a car seat. Otherwise, you'll be dragging it in and out of shuttles and all over the place with you.
Are you taking CME or another shuttle the 3.5 hrs from the airport to Steamboat? I do not recall any seatbelts on the local shuttles around town and there are only a few seats (most are made for skiers to stand and hold their skis/boards). you will not have a place to clip in a carseat for your DD in the local shuttles. The town is pretty spread out with the mountain base area about 4 miles from town and about 1 mile from the grocery store/Walmart, etc...
Walkable means a lot of different things. What is technically walkable is not usually fun to walk in the snow wearing ski boots and carrying gear. the ski shuttles do run very frequently and can certainly get you to the mountain and back w/o any worries. Most of the resorts should have free parking.
Depending on what your plans are I would recommend renting a car. But if you are not used to driving in snow then you could be safer to use the shuttles. There will be snow at the top of Rabbit Ears pass and if you aren't used to that type of driving it can be nerve-wracking. We go there a few times a year and are currently planning a weekend there next month (still figuring out where we're staying though).
If you want to PM the area you're staying in I can see if I'm familiar and would be able to help you more.
