question for homeowners

How normal is buyers remorse or cold feet during escrow?  My H seems to have it right now.  We're smack dab in the middle of escrow and he's freaking out just as we're supposed to lift our contingencies.  :(

Re: question for homeowners

  • I think a few moments of panic are totally normal. I cried- as in sobbed, almost hysterically- on the way to the closing for our first house. I was terrified and suddenly thought we were in way over our heads. But it all worked out. We love our first house and buying was the right decision. Now we're closing in 6 days on our second house, and I'm starting to feel the fear set in again a little bit.

It's such a huge commitment, and it's probably the largest purchase you'll ever make. I think it's normal to have mixed emotions.

    I should add...

It's important that you were both 100% on board with your decision to buy and totally set on the place you chose. If that's not the case, it may not be an issue of nerves- it may be a bigger problem.

  • Pretty normal.  I definitely felt it.
  • I'd say it's completely normal. I did it, all of my friends and family have done it and my clients do it on a regular basis (I'm an agent, too). As a PP stated, so long as you are both on board with the decisions, go for it.
  • I had the, "are we in over our heads freak out?" when we put the offer in, I can't imagine what I'll be like on our way to closing (moving to another state for my DH's job) so I'll have two hours in the car to stew about it.
  • I had several weeks of omgwtfarewedoingitis.

Some feelings of cold feet/remorse is normal but warrant further thinking.

    What are his concerns, specifically?

  • I'm not that far along yet, but on Monday when I came home and saw the sign post for the for sale sign I freaked out... it is so...final.  We are really going to move!

I am so stressed about this right now.  I went to bed with a head ache, I woke up with a head ache, my face is totally broken out.  I am hoping that this passes soon.  I know we are making the right decision, but I don't adjust well to change. :)

  • He's freaking out about closing costs, the costs of fixing up the house, whether or not we offered a low enough price (and got a good enough deal).  I have checked and rechecked everything, and we've got a good deal, and we can afford it.  The house really is the best deal we could find in the area we want.  I have searched for 9 months, and this is the one.

I'm chalking this up to cold feet.

    Thanks for your helpful words!

Yeah, that sounds like nerves getting the best of him. Don't worry and good luck! It'll all work out fine!

My husband is worried about the same things as yours. Did we put in a low enough offer has been stated over and over again by DH. We both have cold feet, but we know this is a good thing just like you guys. It's such a big commitment and makes us nervous, but we're both really excited too. Good luck!
