So, I'm home sick-- for the 3rd going on 4th day in a row. I don't think this will come as a huge shock, but I'm bored as hell and getting a little stir-crazy.
A couple days ago, I ordered an OPI nail polish colour that, on their web site, looked like it might be okay on me. Today, it arrived in the mail and I figured I would play around with it. I now have both feet's nails painted and only the nails on my right hand.
Why? Because the colour-- not too bright, not too flashy-- looks horrible on my fat, stubby fingers.
I have what I used to lovingly call "immigrant hands." Short, stubby, strong fingers and large, square palms. Not good for putting the moves on the basketball court, but handy for other things.
My mom has BEAUTIFUL, slender fingers with delicate wrists. And while I wouldn't necessarily want all my bones to be like that (my mom would NEVER have been able to play the sports I played), sometimes-- especially now that I'm older-- I wish my hands were more elegant. ESPECIALLY when it comes to wearing nail polish.
I LONG to wear cute colours. Pretty, sometimes vibrant colours. On my fingernails, alas, I can only wear clear or pale nude/blush colours.
Anyone else have this hangup? I don't know why it bothers me from time to time, but I see some really cute fingernail polish on people and I get jealous. (Interrobang, you have a photo of yourself with really cute blue nailpolish on-- LOVE IT!)
On another note, if anyone wants a practically unused bottle of OPI Java Mauva-a, it goes to the first requester (I promise I'll disinfect it first!)... I even have a couple photos of it on my toes and 5 of my fingers...

Re: S/O nailpolish and self-esteem (not a vent)
I have long fingers & long nailbeds but I still think nailpolish looks funny on me. I think it's more that it's just not me. I having pedicures though but try to keep my nailpolish pretty basic (shades of reds or purples). I do love how a french manicure looks but I cannot pull off most colors.
My coworker has amazingly manicured hands and always has different colors on and looks stunning.
I wear colours on my toenails-- pale, metallic lavender or ice blue.
At some point, I'm going to purchase the "Planks a Lot" OPI colour to wear on my toes. Any kind of colour just seems to look bizarre on my fingernails. When I was a teenager/college kid, I pulled off colours because I was a little on the punky side and my entire outfits were a bit colourful and funky.
I think the brighter/darker colours just seem to make my fingers shorter and stubbier.
Maybe I'll ease into it, though, and try some of the lavender Planks A Lot on my fingernails...
But seriously, if anyone wants the Java Mauve-a, it's up for bid. I don't even like it on my toes. It almost blends in too much with my pink skin.
my fingers are good, but my thumbs and index fingers have round nail beds, my middle finger has an oval nail bed, and my ring and pinky fingers have square nail beds. No amount of filing makes them look uniform and polish exaggerates the differences.
And I overall suck at nail polish brush control and I always flood.
I am HORRIBLE at applying nail polish. I always have to go back and wipe off my skin with remover on a Q-tip.
bummer you don't like the color! I know how exciting it can be to get mail, especially new polish!!! All this talk about nails means we should have a mani/pedi GTG :-)
BTW, Kinky in Helsinki was and is still one of my favorites - it has been discontinued, but was a fun purple. Seriously, whose job is it to come up with these names? I want that job!! My winter color of choice is OPI Red and summer Strawberry Margarita.....
I wish I could do reds and colours like that-- it always looks like I'm bleeding from my finger tips, though!
And yes-- half the fun of the polishes are the names! LOVE them! I would totally love to learn how they come up with the names, too!
I have long, skinny, pale fingers (they are seriously the only long thing on my body...I'm barely 5'1", so they are kind of freaky), but short nail beds, so they're weird. So, there's always something...
Plus, with my job, I can't wear nail polish on my fingers...I do love getting my toes done, though. I miss pedicure season.
This, exactly!! I love fun colors on my toes, but think polish looks kinda weird on my finger nails. Since having kids and gaining weight, my hands don't look the same to me. So I stick to super light or very dark. Linkin Park After Dark is a huge favorite of mine, and I'm going to try Vampsterdam from the new "Holland" line when it comes out next month!
This, minus the LPAD. Daniele, if it makes you feel any better, I have very long, slender fingers and still feel like anything but a super-understated polish makes them look stubby and weird.
That actually DOES make me feel better! LOL
Especially after hanging out with my friend who has AWESOME nails-- bright red today. And looking elegant.
