Zoning/LI Should i just keep my mouth shut?

So we have shady neighbors in the connecting half of our twin. There are tons of people coming and going. They smoke out front kind of inconsiderate and seem like they are on drugs. There was also the time I walked out and guys pants were down around his waist and he had a pocket full of presictopion pill bottles.

I did some snooping on L&I and realized that it is a rooming house. Well an illegal rooming house, they were denied in 2009 to be zoned as first floor a apartment and the top two floors as 5 SINGLE rooms no baths/kitchen etc. i would love to get rid of these people and the illegal rooming house next door.

I can call L&I and do some further snooping or should I just deal with the fact that i may just have crummy neighbors.I also now have the owners name/address/phone.

My big concerns are the shady folks they bring around, what if someone has a hot plate in their room, smoke in room etc. since there are no kitchens/access to kitchen.

  • I would tell everyone at the park about this.

the more i think about the skectchy aspects the more i want to call. do we have a neighborhood association?

  • I'd call, but I'm a 90 year old in a 28 year old woman's body.

Totally serious.  I feel like people would be outraged, what with all of the kids on that block.

I would call.  And if I saw something even remotely shady, call the police district directly.  Remember when they came for the dog I found?

  • Call for sure. We (myself & many of my neighbors) used to call our local police district (and anyone who would could think of) to complain about our one neighbors.  He eventually started a large fire in his home due to all of the extension cords he was using and ruined the two attached homes.... And 2 people lost their lives. It sucked. You have to think of yourself and family first.  Plus- its super annoying to live next to dirty/weird people. It drives me insane. I became obsessed.

  • Call, call, call!  As someone who has lived in the vicinity and had the presence of DEA agents on my street at 2 different apartments (once for my downstairs neighbor in a duplex), deal with this immediately.
  • Definitely call!

  • i would totally call. what is the worst thing that could happen? i can almost guarantee that is isn't as bad as what could happen if you don't call. that is super shady. eta: i would also look around on craigslist and what not to see if you can find ads for the rooms.

  • I would 100% call.

  • My parents had a similar issue a few years ago with an absentee landlord who lived out of state and the house next door.  They called L&I (they also have a form you can fill out online I believe) and the Police.  You may have to do it a few times.  It must have worked, because eventually, the owner put the house up for rent through a broker and now a single family is in there.  Now with  the 311 line, I don't know if that is also an option.  You own your home, and I would definetly complain because that is just me.  If you need the owner's information, that is public record.

  • I would definitely call, and tell your neighbors too. I like the idea of doing some digging on craigslist, too. Start keeping a journal and document everything you see.

You guys just bought this house, and who knows ---it could be your long-term/forever house. You don't want to deal with these folks when little M is riding his bike outside or playing with friends.

  • I called 311. They said an inspector will come out in 30 days. The place is zoned as a duplex. I'm sure they can lie and say they are all related. But we shall see. Ugh visually from outside it looks like a duplex but Verizon has six accounts. So clearly there is something shady.
  • Can it even be a duplex if the first floor "unit" is the only one with a kitchen?  Wouldn't there have to be another kitchen upstairs for it to be considered a separate living space?

  • I think it was zoned before proper zoning codes as a duplex. There is no kitchen according to the paperwork. There is one 3 piece bath shared on second floor. So same layout we have. 3 bedrooms second, 2 bedrooms third floor.
  • That's crazy and seems like it would be more of a headache for the owner to manage that than to just rent out to a single family.  Unless the inside of the house has ever been taken care of and they can't get a family to rent.  I wouldn't want to have to deal with that mess for my neighbor.  Good luck!

Yeah think slum lord. I bet it needs work. And he bought the property as a boarding home. In 85. I bet no one cared who lived in our home . Well I do!

  • If there are beds/paritions in the basement or partitions in any of the other rooms, that is a definite sign of a boarding house also!

  • I've neve been inside! I looked up zoning records. They (landlord) tried to apply for zoning and were denied twice. But the owner states it was sold to him as a boarding house etc. Verizon came and asked us if we knew what was up since the building has six accounts. And then it all came together for us.

a person moved or recently with trash bags. So it's not like one big happy family. Also they have several pets in the house.

  • Just make sure you f/u and call back 311 if you know no one has came out after 30 days. That really sucks. Also, don't be afraid to call 911 if things get even more sketchy. I can't imagine living next to...attached to... that especially with Milo. Hell, I'd be afraid that one of them would be drugged/pilled up and set something on fire with a cig or something by accident while high. This is no joke. I hope you figure out what is going on quickly for both you guys and the rest of your neighbors on the street. Good luck!!

  • When my parents had to call the police on their neighbors because of a noise issue at 4 am, the police told them to call L&I because they saw beds and partitions in the basement.  My parents were never actually in there.  But the six Verizon accounts- definite clue to use to your advantage!  I also agree with HW, follow-up with 311 in 20 days and don't hesitate to call 911 whenever you see something suspicious going on.  I would also call L&I on my own and follow-up with them on a continuous basis.

  • Trust me now that I know what the what is. I am on tfalls calling them out on everything. You guys know I like to call 911 and not deal with craycray directly.
