more CD help

Sorry, I feel like all I post these days are baby related stuff.

The BGs smell like pee after I wash them-- I washed a load on Sunday and they smelled so I washed them again and they still smell. What am I doing wrong? I can't remember how much detergent I use but I had measured it out the first time and then scoop the same amount each time... it was either 1tbsp or 2? or something like that? I can't remember-- I'm using Planet right now.

I do a cold rinse/ soak, a hot wash w/detergent and another cold rinse (sometimes two rinses).

Re: more CD help

  • I use 1 Tbsp of Planet but I have really soft water. I do a cold rinse (not a soak b/c that is just soaking the diapers in pee water) Then I do a hot wash with detergent. Then I do a hot or warm rinse. They say cold rinse but if you actually ask customer service what to do if they still stink and they say do a warm/hot rinse instead of the cold. So, I just always do that now. If they still have a bit of an odor I do a second hot rinse. HTH!!
  • wouldn't washing them twice get rid of it then? I did two full cycles with all those steps ( and didnt do the soak, just the rinse). I meant to try warm rinse but forgot...

have you tried baking soda? I read about that helping.

  • I'm pretty sure I've read that if your diapers still stink right out of the wash, you need to use more soap.

Also, I had this problem when I was using Charlie's Soap, so I switched to Rockin' Green and have never had that problem again, so you could also try a different detergent.  I feel like sometimes a different detergent works for each household, depending on their water and type of machine.

That's basically what the Diaper Lab class I took said-- water is different everywhere so you never know what is going to work... I didn't want to add too much detergent! I will try again tonight with more and see.

  • I don't think stripping will help but you could try.

We do cold rinse, hot wash/cold rinse, cold rinse and they have a really slight stink but hey, they are diapers.  We use Planet too but I measure with the cap.  I fill the cap to the "1" line.  I have never had a problem with buildup either (and we have hard water).

Also, BG/Cotton Babies recommends that the diapers are bleached with less than 1/4 cup about once a month.  I usually do this on the first of the month (so i remember!)

Do you bleach the shells as well as the inserts?

  • My routine is: one cycle - hot wash with one tablespoon of homemade diaper wash (eco-family recipe) with a cold rinse.

The wash I do closest to the 29th of each month (since C was born on the 29th) I do as the bleach load - the whole load - inserts, diapers, wet bags, pail liner, and washcloth wipes.

    That's it.  No stink.

I've had to strip them once, since daycare slipped and used rash cream, and we had some leak issues for a while.  All of my BGs are used - some are on their 3rd child.

Mine that were older stank a bit when I got them.  I think it's because the previous family put the used diapers in a Rubbermaid bin between washes - all sealed up.  Ick!  I have mine in a trash can with a loosely fitting lid that lets the air in.   That was something I picked up on at the Diaper Lab workshop - air is good.  How are you storing them when dirty between washes?

I bleach whatever is in the load.  So, yes--inserts, shells, wetbag (even though the wetbag says not too)

  • I ended up doing two warm rinses, plus a hot heavy wash with extra hot water added in (two tea kettles filled with boiling water) and then two cold rinses and they don't smell anymore!
  • Glad you got rid of the smell!  I can't remember what you're using (BG's?)???  I noticed once Abby was around 8-10 months her diapers retained the ammonia smell much more than when she was newborn.  I ended up stripping the diapers in a tub of HOT water with the blue Dawn.  I now do this every 4-6 weeks. I try the first of the month (like Jess).  I also realized that top loaders can be a benefit to cloth diapering and we have front loaders so the soak in the tub help a lot.  Good luck keeping the stinkies away!
