One Day In Tokyo

Going to Tokyo in a couple weeks. I'm actually spending 3 days there, but one day we are dedicating to taking V to the aquarium and Meiji Jingu garden, one day we will be watching DH play hockey and antoher full day we want to see a few sights. I'm not super interested in any shopping (unless it's something interesting/different) but I'd love to know what your highlights of Tokyo were if you've been!

Re: One Day In Tokyo

  • I went when I was 9 and my highlights were eating Wendy's and bowling, neither of which I would recommend as an adult :) I do remember enjoying it though!

  • The train system was very easy to use there! We liked walking around the Harajuku (sp?) district, there were some interesting outfits!

I have to think more about what we did in Tokyo and I'll let you know!

  • Okay, so I have absolutely no idea where in Tokyo it would be located, but do yourself a favor and find a COCOICHIBANYA CURRY HOUSE...it's the most amazing food on the planet.

They were all over Okinawa when I lived there.  Chicken cutlet is the most popular protein, I would say...I always got 400g of rice, chicken cutlet curry with wild vegetable, level 8.  AHHHHH... /drool...

    Have fun!

  • We liked the Tokyo fish markets (tsukiji). You have to get there very early but it is pretty cool to stroll around and see the auction and types of fish. We also walked around Ginza afterward which has shopping and department stores. We went to the Meiji shrine and Asakusa temples. Saw Kabuki in Ueno ( very cool but probably difficult a baby). The intersection at the Shibuya station exit (Lost in Translation) is excellent people watching and sight seeing.

We also had the best Shabu- Shabu in Tokyo. We checked out the nightlife in Roppongi- karaoke fun! I think it was just fun walking around the various city districts and taking it all in. Have fun!

  • We spent a week in Tokyo and it was fantastic. It's hard to know what to recommend though - we were so excited by the sushi and the shrines but you must see a lot of that already!

We were fascinated by the interesection at Shibuya, we got a snack and watched for ages. There are just so many people! Harajuku was interesting and different to walk around and there's a pretty shrine right there. Asakusa is really pretty and we found Odaiba to be pretty hilarious - there's a mini statue of liberty there that I giggled at for a while.

this (http://www.tokyo-subway.net/english/) was the single most handy website I found. You can plug in any station and it will tell you how to get around. There are different lines so it can get expensive if you don't have a plan beforehand so we figured everything out ahead of time. I did lots and lots and lots of planning beforehand so I have a many page spreadsheet but I was terrified of getting lost (we'd never been to Asia before). It's really, really easy to get around on the metro so you can go anywhere in the city really.

Oh - I have a lonely planet PDF that I bought for Tokyo, PM me with your email address if you want me to email it over.

  • Tsukiji's great,, but I wouldn't take a child there. The floor's too slippery and it's too bbusy to be safe. Ueno park has a nice Asian art museum. Harajuku's great for people watching. Meji shrine is in a sort of foresty area in Harajuku while Asakusa is brightly colored and there's a street of touristy shops that lead up to the shrine. Also, the imperial gardens, but it's been cold/snowing here, so I don't know. I was there in January two years ago and it was pretty. Have fun! And be sure to people watch!
