How much boiled chicken for a 60lb dog?

Hi ladies!  I just posted this over on pets board, but was wondering if anyone on here may know the answer.....Pearl has had some tummy issues... Embarrassed

------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

I just got home from the vet, my pitbull had gone #2 in the house and had blood in her stool (lovely opening line,heh?....sorry)

Long story short, she's been on arthritis meds that may have caused her ulcers??. Vet gave us meds and told me to feed her only boiled chix for week. Problem is...when I asked him how much chicken she should eat....he wouldn't give me a straight answer. He basically said enough to make her want to rest and feel full....Confused

okay, well, just thought i'd see if anyone had any idea. She normally eats a little under 3 cups of dry dog food a day if that helps.

Thanks in advance for any help!

  • Hmmm this is usually a question I'd be all over. I've had to put Raven on Chicken and Rice before. I think I gave her a breast at each meal and a cup of rice. She is a very lean 90 lbs though.

  • lol...i just read bill your post and he said...."well, we got ourselves a soft 62 pounder"....

Thank you, that sounds about what I thought. Yes

  • Yeah I tried to search to find you a better answer but I couldn't find one. Did her tell you to mix in some pumpkin too? Not pie mix just regular pumpkin. People swear by it for GI issues.

My old roommate had 2 great danes. I helped her feed the dogs. It was such a production. The got kibble, pumpkin, cottage cheese, green beans, wet food, and probiotics!!

  • Have you ever looked into going raw with her? It's like having a new dog. Bretta had a ton of stomach issues and once we put her on the raw diet they disappeared. She  is 50 lbs and gets approx. 2.5 lbs of food a day, most of that is chicken.

If you're interested in the raw diet let me know, I've got a few resources and I can answer a lot of questions.

  • I was going to suggest one chicken breast and a cup of rice.

My husband is contemplating a raw diet for the dogs. I freak out whenever he drops raw meat on the floor and lets the dog go at it bc it doesn't seem "right" that it doesn't hurt them. It's taken a little adjustment!

Madame, do you find it more or less expensive? We go through a 35lb bag ($50) about once a month.

Think of it this way: do wolves eat cooked meat? Probably not. The whole idea around the raw diet is that it's just what they should/would get if they were wild. I wouldn't recommend giving a dog just any raw meat though, you want to make sure it's from a place that handles meat in a clean and safe way so that your dog doesn't get sick.

It is more expensive for us because we can't just go to the butcher and get the meat (for the dog to have all the calcium they need they need the bone ground into the meat, not just ground meat like we humans use) We have to buy it through a dog food company that is only sold at boutiques here, putting our weekly dog food bill at about $25, including the veggies but excluding the joint supplement she gets ($30 for a tub every 3ish months.)

We  rationalize it with the fact that if she wasn't on this diet we'd be at the vets at least once a month and it's $60 a visit, not to mention if we needed to actually do anything.

Indifferent  - our dog babies are expensive!!!!

to prior posts...i've read the rice & the punpkin thing on line too.  So, we might try using some rice tonight.  I fed her 2.5 (smaller) chicken breasts last night and will give her a small one this morning....she's not acting ravenous so i'm hoping that sufficient.  It just looks like a lot less food compared to the dry food.

As far as raw, i'm sure she'd be in doggy heaven.  But I'd def have to do some research before we got into that.  I'd end up giving her salmonela, mad cow or some crap knowing my luck.  thanks ladies ~ oh btw - she seems to be doing a lot better, no brown & red presents when i got home from work last night.  Yes,

    and....HAPPY FRIDAY!!!!  Party!!!
