Puerto Rico? Nice beaches?

How's Puerto Rico?  I've never been.  My friend and I are open to going anywhere it's warm enough to be beach bums and where we can get a direct flight out of Boston.  PR popped up on the radar, but I don't know much about it.  Is it nice?  How are the beaches?  Any hotel recommendations?

Thanks!

Re: Puerto Rico? Nice beaches?

  • I think it depends on what part of PR you decide to stay in- I've heard mixed reviews about the beaches near San Juan but La Monserrate in Luquillo is amazing beach that holds the Blue Flag designation.  I believe the Seven Seas Beach in Fajardo near Luquillo also has this designation.

We loved our time in PR- it is nice that it is a commonwealth of the US but still has a European flair.  I have a post in my blog (link in siggy) that details everything we did, where we stayed, where we ate, etc.

  • Puerto Rico is amazing and as pp said some beaches are better than others. I have always wanted to stay on the island of Vieques which has some of the most gorgeous secluded beaches. There is a new W there now which is supposed to be great. Another hotel I have visited and wished I could stay was the Horned Dorset Primavera. I have stayed in Farjardo and it was pretty there as well but I think there are even some beaches which have much clearer water than that.
  • Flamenco Beach on Culebra Island, off the cost of PR is my all time favorite beach. It is absolutely stunning, but since it is a little off the beaten path, it isn't crowded at all. Getting to Culebra is fairly easy. It is a very cheap and short ferry ride from the east coast of PR. It isn't super developed so the hotel options are mainly small inns and B & B's. It is quiet, though, so if you are looking for a place to party, it probably isn't the best spot.

  • I was really unimpressed with the beaches near San Juan. We stayed in Isla Verde and it was a $20 cab ride into San Juan and the beach was not that great - the water was not clear at all and there was lots of seaweed. I liked San Juan, but I think 1-2 days there would be enough before moving on to another area.

I have heard great things about Vieques and the photos I have seen are gorgeous (super clear calm water). Near there you can also go kayaking at night in a bioluminescent bay, which looks awesome.

  • I loved Maria's beach in Rincon which is on the Western side of PR. We also found some other really nice quiet beaches in Rincon. Isabella had some great beaches too. We found Hobos beach to be very nice---crowded on the weekend, but very quiet on the weekdays. We flew into Aguadilla instead of San Juan and took a day trip to San Juan because we really wanted to see El Yunque, which is the national rainforest. It's a really nice place to visit. I recommend it for sure.
