what age to get an email account?
My BIL sent an email to us (everyone in the family) earlier today and I noticed my nephew's name and another new "to" address.
I emailed BIL and he said yep - their kids got email addresses - nephew is 12, niece is 9. I guess that sounds about right, but OMG, I was kinda freaked.
I'm sure I'll get a friend request from my nephew in another few months.
Re: what age to get an email account?
Those ages sound about right. I didn't get one until I was 15 or 16 but we didn't have internet until then.
DS has one but DH just set it up for him so that we can send him emails that he can read when he's older. He obviously doesn't use it now!

My nieces both "have" email accounts - my SIL made them when each one was born. this gives them the bonus of having gmail accounts with their names attached (which they may not want in HS but eventually probably will, if gmail is still around) and she inputs things for each daughter into their google calendars and its shared with her and my brother - so they can take one look and see who has a doctor appointment and so on. We are planning on doing the same thing when we have a name nailed down for this little guy.
Now, when he'll have an email account that he has full access to? IDK. I had one in 7th grade (none of my friends did though lol) so I'm figuring it will be younger than that. But H's cousin does NOT have one and she's almost 12 and in 6th grade - I think with texting having an email may be less important? not sure.
Devyn is 7 and I have just been talking to him about making an account for him.
Normally I would probably wait another couple of years but his best friend from school moved away and I know he will not write her letters by hand. He hates writing. But he loves getting onto the computer. This way I can get him to practice writing his stories while he has actually fun and stays in touch with his friend
We didn't get internet access until I was 15, so that's when I got my first email account.
Boy do I feel old! I didn't get an email until I was into my 20s - after college for sure.
My nephew got Facebook at 12 but I am not sure if he has an email address.

I have actually thought about setting up gmail accounts for my kids so they have them with their name already to go. I don't have a problem w/ younger kids having them so long as mom & dad have the password and can monitor as needed.
I can see DD getting one around age 7 or so.
We had "prodigy" psuedo-internet when I was in high school and I know I had a prodigy e-mail address, but I don't remember what it.
We had CompuServe when I was about 13, so that's when I first started having internet handles. It wasn't email as we know it now, but still.
I can see allowing email when they're young, but I'll certainly expect full access to the account. Social networking sites won't come until later, though, and even when they do, I'll also expect full access.
I love this idea! The google commercial where the dad sets up an account for his daughter and then sends her emails through the years makes me cry every time!
