Ang & other exercisers

I need some help - I'm looking online, but am not having any luck.

Do you know of any exercises for people that are overweight and have severe arthritis?

Just found out both of my grandparents have diabetes (gma already did, gdad just found out today). Time for tough love. Gma has gained a significant amount of weight lately and apparently Gdad is doing something wrong too.

Thanks

Re: Ang & other exercisers

  • Pool exercises are relatively low impact and great exercise for older people with arthritis. Like water aerobics.

I don't know how easily accesible a pool would be, though

  • I know a couple old folks that do exercise bands from the comfort of their recliners.

I would also suggest something like water aerobics. It's much less strain on the muscles because you don't have the impact of something like running. Would be a good thing to look into.

  • I agree with the water, it's very low impact, but very effective.  There are a lot of senior citizens at my gym and I would say 90% use the pool on a regular basis.

If they don't belong to a gym, there's a workout series from Leslie Sansone (I think that's her name) called Walk Away the Pounds that you can do right in your living room.  So they wouldn't have to go outside in the cold or have to walk anywhere that is unsafe.  I've heard it's really good for people who are very overweight to start off with.  Hopefully their arthritis isn't bad enough where they couldn't manage it.

They probably should talk to their physician first though.  He/she could provide them with a more appropriate eating and exercise plan that takes into account the diabetes and arthritis.

  • This company probably has some good at-home videos:

  • Like the PP said, water exercising is very low impact.  Also, my gym used to to a chair workout for the older folks and that was a big hit.

I found a local YMCA - they won't be able to afford it, but I qualify for a "discounted" rate so i'll buy them a membership - I was reading, this particular one offers a lot of aquatic programs and quite a few senior specific classes -

Bonus: the membership comes with 1 personal training session and 4 "Fit start" sessions - they plan an exercise program to help you meet your goals and fit your needs
