Changing locks

I'm getting ahead of myself here, but I'm wondering - when you move into a new house, is the cost of changing the locks hidden somewhere in the closing costs, or are you responsible for that, as the new owner?

Is this a spendy thing?

Re: Changing locks

  • You're responsible for that. We just bought all new entry knobs.

  • You're definitely responsible.

We had all our locks re-keyed instead of replacing them.  I think there were 5 in total and I want to say it cost around $90 - $100.

  • We were responsible.  We actually only got keys to 2/3 entry doors, so the first thing we did the night we closed was change the doorknobs.

ETA: we bought the doonknobs at Home Depot and it cost maybe $70.

  • We changed all exterior locks about a half hour after closing. Picked them up at home depot the night before and then changed them ourselves the next day. I think we came to about $300 for the three doors.

  • We bought a foreclosure and the bank paid for the locks to be changed--the locksmith was at our house when we got there after closing to meet us.

  • Thanks! That's what I figured, but not as expensive as I thought.

  • you pay....we met the sellers, and know all the neighbors already (mostly because the sellers introduced us), and honestly dont feel the need to change the locks. We will put a different lock on the basement when its finished since the plan is to rent it out.
