Does anyone bake their own bread?

I really want to try baking my own bread.

Any tips?

  • I do--in a breadmaker. It's so simple--put the ingredients in and press a button!

    I'm actually on my second breadmaker because I wore the first one out.

  • I cheat...I buy frozen loaves and bake them. It's crazy easy and really yummy.

  • I also use a breadmaker. It's awesome!! (I don't remember the last time I actually bought bread from a store...)

    Make sure you always do the ingredients in the order listed. (I believe it's liquids, solids, yest, or something to that affect.) Doing it in the wrong order can really screw it up.

  • I only make specialty bread (banana, zucchini, etc.) but I don't really have any tips? I follow directions, flour the pan, and viola! It comes out of the oven wonderfully. 

    Oh, but don't open the oven to check on it.

  • Do you have a pizza stone?  I use that when I make bread/focaccia/calzones.

    Also, if you put a pan of hot water in the bottom of the oven, it will create steam that gives you a chewier crust.

    One of the first cookbooks I ever bought was "The Italian Baker" by Carol Field.  I highly recommend it for all kinds of things, but especially the bread and puff pastry recipes.

  • I have a breadmaker and use it sometimes.  It's super easy and like Liz said, you just throw all the ingredients in.  I usually only do wheat bread, but I need to try something a little more exciting sometime for variety.
