Teen Mom 2 question (spoilers)

I'm not even sure what day this show tapes, I had a bunch of episodes I just got caught up on.  But with the Leah & Corey situation - I'm so confused.  Why wouldn't he want to get a new place? And it's not like they are buying a mansion - Leah just wants him to look at better trailers.

I can relate in the sense that my husband is not home much, and I get frustrated with house issues that don't get taken care of - but nowhere near like Leah taking the twins down to that trailer basement for bath time.  And I think she couldn't have put it any better, a better house is for the babies.  I can't figure out why Corey is so stubborn and doesn't even want a nicer place, he looks like he has completely shut down and miserable.

Re: Teen Mom 2 question (spoilers)

  • I just did a HUGE update down below about my theories!  :)

  • He is immature and selfish. He got married too young and for the wrong reasons.
  • Interesting theory.  I noticed too when Leah was applying for jobs, Corey was saying something about then she can go flirt with other guys.  Or even the suspicion that she is off cheating.  There must be a level of distrust there, he doesn't even trust her to be working at a dental office.  He seems miserable, and maybe it's his job too.  I know I certainly wouldn't want my DH being a coal miner.  Seems like they could be doing better on the MTV $$.
  • Well obviously he knew they weren't going to last much longer, so why buy a house with a girl he's going to break up with very soon.
  • I would be horrified if DH said he wanted to be a coal miner. It seems very dangerous- with the risk of being trapped as well as the long term health consequences.

Does anyone know how much money a coal miner makes? Is it prestigious in WV to be a coal miner's wife?

Coal miners make really good money and they often don't have to pay for their health insurance. I would assume it's not about prestige, but more about the fact that it's a really good paying job in the Appalachian areas.

    "Really good money" is subjective.

According to google- Annual salary of coal miner= $53,500

I would hardly call that a really good salary.

$53,500 to a guy with a high school education, not too long out of high school, in a poor area is probably "really good money" to him. I agree it's subjective, but to most people in those areas that is good money.

In my MCOL area, that is pretty good middle class. I think WV is a lower COL area so it might be more money. Of course, to someone in a HCOL area like NY that wouldn't be a lot.

  • You have to consider COL. WV is very low COL. I live in OH and we have a pretty low COL and 50k isn't that bad for someone with a degree, let alone a HS grad.

It is a very good salary for West Virginia.

I agree.  WV is a very low cost of living area.

    Exactly!

I am confused too...she explained that a new trailer for them would be ~$900 and the land is ~$140/month. So I cannot understand why he wouldn't want that unless of course he knew it wasn't going to last.

I don't think 'prestigious' is the right word but they are held in high regard.  Coal mining is a profession with a very high chance of injury/death.  Like the spouses of military, police and fire fighters, coal miners' wives are respected for being able to kiss their husbands good-bye everyday not knowing if their man will come home that night.

Add that to her $75k annual salary, and they're bringing in over $125k/year in a very LCOL area.
  •  I live in NY, have a degree and strive to earn 50k.

I think 50k is good money regardless of where you live, teenager or not.
