Relocating to MA

My husband was just offered a job in Billerica and I was wondering if you guys might have any advice on towns in the area to live.  He is willing to have about a 45 min commute each way.  We have a 1 year old so we would like for it to be somewhat family friendly and have good schools.  We are just looking to rent right now, preferably a townhouse.  TIA!

Re: Relocating to MA

  • Welcome!

I don't know that area very well but you're close to Concord/Carlisle which I'm pretty sure has an excellent school system.

Lots of ladies on the board in the Chelmsford area so they'll probably be more helpful.

I'd rather be rock climbing or playing volleyball

  • I don't know much in that area either, but hopefully some of the other ladies can help you out with recs.

    Welcome to the board!

  • I live in an adjacent town to Billerica but don't really know much about the school systems... I know MrsC & MrsT will probably know more than I do!
  • Howdy!

So, Billerica. Area wise is it pretty big and has about 40k people. A lot of fast food. Not much else. The school system is okay. Not stellar, but I got a good education and went to a great college. Houses are more affordable there than most of the surrounding towns.

Tewksbury and Wilmington are very similar, though they have more shopping. Their school systems are pretty much the same as Billerica. Burlington has tons of shopping and restaurants. As Chelmsford's rival I'm supposed to say boo-hiss, but it is a good town, good school system, right at the 495/3 interchange so it is easy to get anywhere. Bedford is nice.

A little further out southern and westward: Lexington, Concord, and Carlisle are $$$ with a great school systems (as Rock pointed out Concord-Carlisle is a regional HS). Lexington and Concord have really nice, walkable downtown areas. Acton & Boxborough also have a highly sought after regional high school and isn't quite as pricey as Lexington and C&C.

More west: Littleton and Westford have really good school systems too. More affordable than the above towns, so in some ways more bang for your buck.

East of Billerica, on the other side of 93: Andover, N Andover, Reading, and N Reading are all good towns but I don't know as much about them.

  • Mrs C said it all!

If you are looking to rent you will be hard pressed to find something in Carlisle.

  • Usually on the bump but just came over here and saw this. I grew up in Chelmsford and it's probably one of the better choices price wise plus it's a nice town with good schools. It also has a lot of townhouses, one in particular that is huge is Williamsburg and is not far from Rt 3 to Billerica. There are "newer" townhouses also but I knew a lot of people that lived here and liked it. Chelmsford would take your husband no more than 20 min depending on back roads or Rt 3 traffic to get to work. Littleton is more affordable also , Westford can be expensive unless you are looking in Nab or Forge Village area (lots of ranch houses). I currently live in Groton which is a very nice town but it takes a lot of back roads to travel to anywhere (I have to drive through LIttleton or Westford to get to a highway.

  • If the original poster is Danielle, then you got my answer in email lol. This is too coincidental to be someone else!

But if not, I just moved from NJ to the Acton area and it's really nice in this area. I recommended Westford---but the only towns I am really familiar with so far are Acton, Boxborough, Littleton, Westford. I still post on the NJ board so you can page me over there.

    GL!
