Starting a non-profit organization
I want to start a non-profit organization in my community (rabbit rescue/shelter). my question is does anyone have any knowledge on how to do this? I am at a loss as to where to start. any leads would be appreciated. thank you!
Re: Starting a non-profit organization
Do you have experience in rescue at all? I think it's great that you want to do this but starting a rescue isn't as simple as "I want to rescue rabbits so I'll start a group".There are experienced rescuers who get overwhelmed when they strike out on their own.
If you have limited or no experience, honestly, starting a group right away *may* not be the way to go. I would recommend you foster/volunteer for an already established organization to get a feel for rescue in general.
However, if you already have experience or if getting that experience is difficult b/c of lack of groups in your area, it's not impossible to start one. I will say, though, if part of it is that you are interested in this because there aren't any groups in your area, be prepared for a lot of headaches. One of the biggest things about rescue is the need to network. If there are no other groups (not specific to rabbits, even dog/cat or other animal rescuers can be a great resource for you), then who are you going to reach out to when you are in a bind, need advice or assistance, etc? How are you going to network with people outside of your area? Who is going to serve as your officers & Board members?
As for actually setting up a non-profit, start by checking with your department of Agriculture about licenses, inspections & regulations. If you are planning on housing the animals at your own residence, you should check on municipal regulations as well.
Here and here are good articles about things to consider.

Ditto this. I would make sure no one else in your community is already doing this. Starting a nonprofit is like starting a small business but 10 times harder. The economy is getting better but alot of foundations are strapped for cash and may not be accepting new grantees. I would suggest checking with your Secretary of State's office as they should have good information. I don't mean to be harsh but this is not an easy task and the nonprofit I used to work for (that also closed down last year due to having no money) used to get calls about this all the time and we'd try to discourage people from doing it. You also have to think about whether you have a group of people that you can recruit as board members and you'll also need a business plan if you want to seek seed money from foundations. I wish you luck and all the best!
