tax time poll

Well, I know it's not exactly tax time, but I'm just waiting for a return text from James to e-file so it's certainly tax time for us.

If you know or have a good idea about your taxes:

1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry)

2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even?

3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)?

4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot?

5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year.

6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on?

Re: tax time poll

  • 1) Anyone file separately? (excludes the not marrieds, sorry) Well we've only filed together once. And will be doing again this year.

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund? How about this year? Do you try to make it so it comes out even? I've owed $7 once. Other than that I've always gotten a refund

    3) Have you ever received a large refund? How much was it (if not too personal)?  I think we got a few hundred last year but I can't remember the exact amount

    4) Have you ever had to owe? A lot? Nope, just that $7 one year

    5) When do you usually file? Last minute, as soon as you can? When are you filing this year. Usually late march early april. This year we will do it asap

    6) If you get a refund, what do you spend it on? The majority will be in savings, but we hope to get enough to buy a freezer.

  • It's definitely tax time in our house!

If you know or have a good idea about your taxes:

    1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry) we did the first year we were married, and it wasn't smart for us. We ended up re-filing.

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even? we've always gotten a refund. Not sure about this year yet, it will be close

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)? We got a big refund last year. H discovered he could get a ton back for still being in school (he finished his master's in spring 2010) and we got a refund of over $2k, I don't remember the exact amount. He refiled from the previous year and got an additional $800.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot? not yet. Crossing our fingers we don't owe this year.

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year. We'll file as soon as H gets his last student loan interest form

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on? A couple years ago, it went toward the down payment on my car. Last year, we paid down a bunch of debt and H got a new TV

  • 1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry) Nope.

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even? When I worked for companies/gov, I always got refunds.  Since I've been self-employed, I always owe.

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)? I think I once got about $2K.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot? Not so far, only a few hundred.

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year. Normally as early as possible.  But, last year was my first time being self-employed and I filed later.  I'll file soon this year...I've already almost finished my taxes.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on? Usually just bills.

If you know or have a good idea about your taxes:

    1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry) Always joint.

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even? We always get a refund.  We would nickle and dime ourselves throughout the year, so we prefer to get them money at tax time in a lump sum.  I am not the least bit worried about "giving the government a free loan."

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)?  A few years ago, we got over 6k!  We were both very surprised.  I thought it was going to be around 1/3 that amount.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot?  Never owed.

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year. Since we get a refund.  We file right away.  If we owed, I'm sure we'd wait until the last minute.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on?  Our yearly family vacation that we take during Tman's spring break.  This year, we are visiting family in NM and MO.

  • 1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry) Nope, together

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even?  Refund, thanks to DH's student loans it's still a nice amount.

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)?  IDK.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot?

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year.  As soon as we can, it depends on the year though.  This year I'd rather do it sooner than later especially with baby coming!

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on? We try to put it into savings... or at least some of it. If not it goes towards debt that we have.

    1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry)

This will be our second year filing together.

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even?

Before we got married, we filed separately and ALWAYS owed. H worked for the university and they never took out enough, and I was a contract employee with a couple of small businesses in town. Last year, we got back a little bit and spent it on paying off our CC and then the rest went to savings. We have no idea what will happen this year.

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)?

We got about $1,200 last year - which was A LOT for us.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot?

Yes, H had an internship a few years ago that they didn't immediately take taxes out for, and we owed quite a bit, but I don't remember how much.

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year.

We usually file as soon as we can. My dad would take forever doing taxes, and I nearly had a heart attack every year waiting for them so I could fill out FAFSA for school. We haven't gotten all of our info in yet and probably won't for another couple of weeks. As soon as we have it all in, we'll do them.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on?

This year, if we get anything back, it'll go toward our vacation.

  • 1) Anyone file separately? (excludes the not marrieds, sorry)

This is the first year we are able to file jointly. we will run the numbers both ways and see which works in our favor

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund? How about this year? Do you try to make it so it comes out even?

Usually we get a refund.  This year we will get one,but not as big - H says we make too much

    3) Have you ever received a large refund? How much was it (if not too personal)?

Last year we got a few thousand back

    4) Have you ever had to owe? A lot?

I had to owe in college (WTF!). luckily it was only about $700

    5) When do you usually file? Last minute, as soon as you can? When are you filing this year.

ASAP! We are still waiting on a few docs, but otherwise will be filing as soon as we can

    6) If you get a refund, what do you spend it on?

It always goes into savings, but we end up spending it later.  This year we'll most likely be putting it into savings and then using it to put money towards our Alaska cruise in September

  • 1) Anyone file separately?  Nope, file joint

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund? To date we've always owed

How about this year? Rough numbers show a $600 refund

Do you try to make it so it comes out even?  There are way to many variables

    3) Have you ever received a large refund? I use to make sure to get refunds in college  How much was it (if not too personal)? $3,000 (I always tried to get a refund to pay for the next semester because I sucked at saving)

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  Yes A lot? Unfortunately. One year was 5K another 9K

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year. Whenever we have all of our paperwork and confirm babies momma didn't go against the court order and claim the kiddo

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on? Back into the savings account

  • 1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry) This will be our 2nd year filing jointly

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even? The first year I was employed full-time, I owed as I hadn't had enough taken out. One year I owed, but only because a portion I was a contractor and I have been saving it all along anyway, and partially because the jerk company I worked for tried to lie and say I wasn't an employee. That was a stressful 4 months of IRS paperwork to prove otherwise! I usually get a refund, I like the refund rather than trying to make it even. I'd rather get money back then find out I owe. H thinks we might owe money this year but I'm not sure why the change.

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)? Largest was a few hundred.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot? See above, first time was a few hundred and the second time I had saved out of each paycheck (since I couldn't have the standard witholding)

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year. I usually file Feb-Marchish. I don't always get the paperwork before the end of January and then I'm just lazy and put it off for a bit. I'm terrible and have let H take over since he's better about doing it than me, so probably sometime next month.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on? I usually use 2/3 of it to pay bills, make extra payments on longer term debt, etc and then use about 1/3 for "fun." If we get one this year, I want to put it towards our vacation to Texas.

If you know or have a good idea about your taxes:

    1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry) File jointly since we've been married. We've gotten a few more hundred back that way.

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even? I have always gotten a large refund. Same as hubs. He would rather make his come out even cause I guess that's the way you're properly supposed to do it. I like having a nice chunk of cash early in the year. Stick out tongue

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)? Depends on what you consider large. By myself I would ususally get back around 1200. Together we hit around 2000.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot? No

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year. File as soon as I can. I'm just waiting on our W-2's.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on? Usually I will pay off at least one bill and then have a little fun money, or keep it in savings. This year I think we're buying plane tickets for my cousins wedding. IF it ends up in Dallas. Otherwise, bills and fun money!

  • I am seriously not looking forward to taxes this year. The marriage tax SUCKS BALLS. That's all I can say. It's one of the issues I'm actually furious about, and DH and I actually toyed with not getting legally married because of it.

    1) Anyone file separately? (excludes the not marrieds, sorry)

This is our first year filing married, so we'll try both, but I'm guessing joint.

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund? How about this year? Do you try to make it so it comes out even?

We try to always owe a little. No idea this year.

    3) Have you ever received a large refund? How much was it (if not too personal)?

Once, in college. I think it was like a thousand or so. But I try not to give the government an interest free loan :p.

    4) Have you ever had to owe? A lot?

Last year I owed like 2 grand. No diea this year.

    5) When do you usually file? Last minute, as soon as you can? When are you filing this year.

We're going to be doing it soon, need to see if we'll be able to handle them ourselves easily (we have a rental property, as well as our first year being married).

    6) If you get a refund, what do you spend it on?

N/A. But if for some strange reason we did, we'd invest it.

  • 1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry)
    Jointly

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even?
Try to keep it even; we usually end up paying a little.

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)?
Yes, but i don't remember the amount.  It was the year we married, moved for work and bought a house.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot?
    Yes; once was around $3000.

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year.
No procrastinating, but not right away -- usually sometime in February.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on?
We don't -- it just goes in savings and checking like the rest of our income.

If you know or have a good idea about your taxes:

    1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry)

I don't know how we're going to file this year - I'm assuming jointly will be better for us, but our tax guy is running both scenarios and will let us know.

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even?

Every year in the past I've pretty much gotten a refund (I agree about not caring about the "free loan" you give the government).  This year I have to pay a $hit-ton.

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)?

Most of my refunds were in the $2K to $3K range, but when I was in grad school I got most all of it back, so then I think once it was $5K-ish (it went to paying for grad school).

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot?

Never have had to owe before, but I owe a *ton* this year.  I could buy a (nice) new car with what I'll pay the government in April.  It's not a surprise, though, and it's a pretty unique situation that we talked to our tax guy about last year (before we got into it so we knew about it) and planned for it.

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year.

We're going to meet with our tax guy next week, he'll get it all together, and then we'll file it.  We actually want to know what we owe, so we'll probably do it sooner rather than later.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on?

Before I always did the 80/20 rule: 80% savings, 20% on whatever I wanted.  This year, we'll pay.  Next year, we'll likely pay, according to our tax guy.  After that, we should be back to refunds and then it will probably just go toward things like house payments, etc.

  • 1) Anyone file separately?  (excludes the not marrieds, sorry) We do not, we file together.

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even? We usually get a refund. I think we'll get a refund this year.

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)? I think we have. I don't remember how much it was though.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot? Nope, we have never had to owe.

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year. We try to as soon as we can.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on? Usually bills, though this year we will be putting it towards buying a house.

no. it's always more when we file together (last year only by a couple bucks, but more is more).

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even?
we usually get a refund. we always talk about trying to make it even, but i think we're paranoid about owing. i've had to owe one year (when i was unemployed for 7 months), but when we filed together, it came out to be better (he/we got less than if he filed by himself, but i "owed" less).

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)?
i think the most we've gotten is like 4k? i think that was the year we bought our house... that's on top of the 8,000 tax credit we got for being first time homeowners.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot?
i would've had to owe if i was on my own. i think it was about $700. crappy, but not breaking the bank.

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year.
we always start right away..then forget about it until mid march. then finally send it in sometime in april. two years in a row we forgot to sign it, so it got *way* delayed.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on?

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even? Last year we owed but every other year we have gotten a refund.

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)? Nope. I don't consider any of the ones we have gotten to be large.

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot? Last year I think we owed $800.

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year. We normally file as soon as we get our W2s. I've received our W2s from work but I'm waiting for W2s from being on bed rest and getting money from the union and insurance for sick pay.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on? It varies year to year. Just really depends on what we need at the time.

We file jointly; it's easier, especially now that I'm a SAHW-and-mom-to-be

    2) Do you usually owe or get a refund?  How about this year?  Do you try to make it so it comes out even?

We try to make it come out even, so we vary between getting small refunds and owing small amounts. This year... No idea. It's our first full year with me not working!

    3) Have you ever received a large refund?  How much was it (if not too personal)?

I got one of about $1000 once many years back, when I was super-poor, and had to spend the ENTIRE GODDAMN THING (and more!!) on apartment damages thanks to my disgusting ex. Seriously, they had to fumigate the place, replace the carpet, replace appliances...

    4) Have you ever had to owe?  A lot?

We owed, like, $400-something once. :-/

    5) When do you usually file?  Last minute, as soon as you can?  When are you filing this year.

As soon as we have all of our paperwork together, we'll file to find out if we owe or if we get a refund. XD If we get a refund, we want it immediately. If we owe, we'll send 'em the cheque last possible minute.

    6)  If you get a refund, what do you spend it on?

Varies! Usually responsible stuff (savings, paying off CCs, etc). Once, a TV.
