Home renovation examples/ideas

We're in the process of buying an old home (early 1900's) that needs to be gutted and renovated.  The contractors we've spoken with want pictures with ideas of what we like.  Anyone have any good resources they've used for this?  Or do you have any examples?

Re: Home renovation examples/ideas

  • are your contractors design/build? if not, i'd get an architect and/or interior designer involved for a complete gut and renovation if you don't already have one.

there are tons of sites and blogs online. google is your friend. you might want to start at hgtv's designers' portfolio site. look at architects' and interior designers' websites/portfolios.

go to a bookstore and look at magazines. at larger ones like barnes & noble there is a whole section for interior design, architecture, and home renovation. home depot even has a section of books & magazines, although a lot of it is fug or NMS.

edited to finish the thought. lol.

    This.

I am an interior designer, and gutting and renovating my own home still wasn't "easy". I couldn't imagine doing it without knowledge of the trade, let alone not knowing what I wanted the house to look like.

We're putting an addition on our house this year, and while we had some ideas, most of the important structural decisions came when we hired an architect.  We still have to choose our own cabinets, counter tops, fixtures, flooring, etc. but as far as walls, windows, general design of the kitchen and bathroom that are affected, the architect was a great resource for ideas and was able to give us various layouts to look at, go over, change, before we settled on a final design.

  • This may not be a a real source but the property brothers show is AWESOME hgtv as some good stuff on the site as well.
