I work in real estate and we have a client that is trying to sell their second "vacation," home. They have darker, hardwood floors. They've always used just water or a steam mop to clean their floors. They had a relative stay in the house and the relative wanted to be nice and clean up before she left but she used some type of cleaner on the floor--maybe a Swiffer or something? It left kind of a residue on the floor and steam mop hasn't removed it.
Long story short, my coworker read in Reader's Digest that you shouldn't use vinegar on hardwood floors because it dulls the finish. That was going to be my suggestion to cut through the residue. Is it safe or will it damage the floor? Or is there another "natural," alternative? The homeowners are really "green," and don't want to use any chemical cleaners. If it was my own floor, I'd just dink around with different options, but I don't want to mess up their floor!
Re: Safe to use vinegar on hardwood floors?
I use vinegar on my hardwood floors all the time, have for years. There hasn't been any damage.
My dad's wife uses vinegar on her hardwood floors too. The house has been in her family since 1811, but I believe the floors were refinished about 50 years ago. They've had vinegar and water used on them ever since and they still look good.
Some people will tell you not to do it. So, if you're looking for a natural alternative... just use dishsoap and warm water. I do that if I'm out of vinegar and the floors need washed.

Have they tried Murphy's Oil Soap? Is all natural - not sure if it will remove the residue though - for sure it won't hurt though.
