Met with a trainer...her thoughts on elliptical

Good morning ladies-

I met with a trainer at my gym yesterday. We talked nutrician and exercise.  She took measurements and weight.  She did rest heart rate and "fat burning" heart rate.  She said that I should be doing a 5 minute warm up, 20 minutes within the "fat burning" heart rate and a 5 minute cool down.

HERE IS THE KICKER- she said stay away from the elliptical. It does not get the heart moving into the "fat burning" zones.  She suggested stair master (UGHHHHHH) or treadmill.  Options for treadmill are walking on an incline or running.  I ran at 5.6mph and also walked 3.5mph with 4.5% incline.  Both produced the same heart rate.  She said that we can go to the gym 5-7 days a week....we will NEVER see results is we never escalate the heart to the "fat burning stage".  Just wanted to pass along the info.

Also, my girlfriend met with a trainer at another gym and was told the same thing about the elliptical. It is fun and kinda hard but willl maintain the same weight vs. assist in weight loss!

Re: Met with a trainer...her thoughts on elliptical

  • That's interesting. I've heard lots of schools of thought on the elliptical. Health professionals say that the elliptical is better if you are prone to knee and joint problems ::waves:: but some people may not be able to get their heart rate up to the fat burn that they need.
  • That kinda makes sense. If you want to lose weight you really have to work hard. I usually dont feel like I'm working that hard on the elliptical, it's the work out I do when I dont feel like working out but want to do "something". Thanks for sharing all of your new knowledge with us! It's great food for thought!
  • That is really interesting. Thanks for passing along the info! I think one of the keys to the conversation with the trainer is that it depends on your heart rate and your specific fat burning zone. I'm a big fan of the heart rate monitors that you wear on your wrist (I don't trust the ones on the machines) so that you can be sure that you're working in the correct "zone". You may be able to actually get your HR high enough on the elliptical, but I think it is one of those "person specific" type things and not something that can be completely generalized.

  • Another good way to burn fat is to strength train.  Lift some weights.  Don't do all cardio.  Muscle burns alot of calories.  Your heart rate won't get up into the "fat burning" zone, but the muscle you create burns more calories in the long run. But then again, this is just my advice.  I'm not a trainer.  I just read things.

I am meeting with her again next week for strength plans. I do weights 2~3 days a week for this exact reason.

She used the resting heart rate (mine was 71 BeatsPerMinute) and did some crazy calculations. Fat burning zone for me is 138~169.  She also explained that if you work over your fat burning zone you are lacking the necessary oxygen to burn fat calories and your body starts to burn muscle.

  • That's exactly the same for me.  This is just my personal opinion for me, so please nobody take offense, but the elliptical is just the easy way out workout for me.  Even if I increase the incline and resistance it's still a much easier workout than if I'm going for a run.

She told me that it is a good "cool down" after weights. Elongates and stretches muscles more than anything. Just sharing the information from my version of "Jillian"

I swear by her! I just started her "Ripped in 30" and it is awesome. I've tried everything - I LOVE to excerise - it is a major stress relief for me. Tread mill is fine for awhile but then I get bored. I've tried watching movies, listening to music, reading books while I'm on it, and over time a start dreading doing it.

Jillian's DVD's do everything for you: Strength, cardio and asb. I highly recommend them. And if you need to be at level 1 for a few weeks - oh well! I'm beginng to think I need to give Jillian a call and say I need a persentage of her sales I've been promoting them so much! ;-)

I tried an elliptical the I went to the gym freshman year in college.  It hurt my knees, and I never went back to rhe gym.

  • She's definitely right. I can tell just by using an elliptical that my heart rate doesn't get as high as when I run or bike. I don't even feel as sore or as "worked out" the next day which always disappoints me. I like that sore feeling. =)

But, it's definitely better for someone with ankle, hip, knee or even back injuries. It much lower impact. I choose to bike because it's a better cardio work out than elliptical but it's still fairly low impact so it doesn't hurt my knees and hip so much.

Jillian is pretty amazing. I have 3 of her DVDs (which I REALLY need to start doing again). I love her ab work out!

  • I guess I am the odd one out. I LOVE my elliptical. I lost about 30 lbs with the elliptical as my only source of cardio and using weights. I have a bad hip and don't like the idea of running outside/on a treadmill. I obviously have off days in my work outs where I don't push myself as hard but for the most part I feel like I get a really good workout from my elliptical.
  • This is great information! Thanks for posting!

I love the elliptical too. I have flat feet and when I walk or run on the treadmill it hurts my feet, knees and hips.  I think you just have to push yourself harder on the elliptical to make sure you are getting to your target heart rate.  Maybe ill have to try mixing in the bike more often. I really would rather do somthing like Zumba for my cardio anyway.  I do some weights everytime I work out though to build my strength.

  • For me, the elliptical gets my heart rate up. I guess it may work well for some, but not for others.
  • I was told the exact same thing by a trainer a few years ago. He said the elliptical is not cardio.. He also suggested running or stair master

It gets my heart rate up too...just not high enough to burn pre stored fat.

  • I think this is a by the person kind of thing.  My heart rate will go into the fat burn zone on the elliptical (as tested by a trainer).  Some people's don't.  I've also taken to know using the arms so that my core has to do more of the work....big muscles burn more is my theory.

Also there are people who lose lbs upon lbs by just walking so it depends on where you are starting and how far you want to go in your personal fitness.

Hmm, I've heard the exact opposite. Two different trainers I've worked with say bikes (stationary-- I can't speak for actual biking, and this DEFINITELY doesn't apply to spin class) are the biggest waste of your time at a gym. You might be talking about on-road biking or spin, so ignore all this, but stationary bikes don't burn anything (according to the above trainers).

We have an Arc trainer at my gym which is said to be better than the elliptical but still low impact for those with knee/etc. issues. I switch up my routines between the arc, elliptical, and incline walking (with some running).

  • I have also read this before. It's a good reminder! Running is supposed to be the best thing for burning fat. Thanks for the info!

  • We spent some time going over nutrician. She explained a few of the "why we do things".  We drink 8 bottles of water a day not only for metabolism but also because it hydrates the cells that are eating our stored fat.  If they are not hydrated they are not working 100% and not burning as many calories during the day.

She mentioned that along with eating every 2.5 ish hours we should consider not having more than 25g of protein in a meal.  Our body can only break down 25g of protein.  Each gram of protein not broken down in digestion is then 4 calories stored for later use.  25g of protein is about 1/2 of one boneless/skinless chicken breast.  So when we eat a whole chicken breast, we are not using 1/2 the protein...25g or 100 calories which is then stored for later (for me....right on my hips or thighs).

She suggested the book The Eat-Clean Diet, Recharged.  I have not purchased it yet...I might get on it. We are not going to go crazy but I am interested to see what it has to say.  Seems along the lines of the Paleo lifestyle.

  • You should totally read it! Eating clean is so important! And I would love to have someone else to talk about it with lol.

  • I know that a lot of trainers don't like the elliptical because they don't think it gets your heart rate up. I happen to go pretty fast on the elliptical though, and my heart rate ALWAYS gets into burning mode on it. But i'm also highly overweight right now. I've tried running but I just don't have the stamina or strength for it yet, I usually end up having to stop after just a couple minutes. I'm planning on sticking with the elliptical for at least another 10 pounds of loss (with my current rate of weight loss, that should be in the next 4 to 6 weeks), building up my stamina on it, and then getting back into running. I agree with the PP's who said that it depends on the person. There are a lot of people who have lost a LOT of weight when their cardio exercise is limited to walking. My grandma is actually unable to do anything more intensive than walking because she has congestive heart failure, and with diet and walking alone she lost 90 pounds and kept it off. The important thing is to get moving.
