First anniversary of Thundersnow!

How will you celebrate the first anniversary of Thundersnow?

Hopefully not by sleeping in your office (as I did) or spending 10 hours in a car (as my husband, and many others, did).

I'm all sentimental. Let's make it a drinking holiday. Beer

I knew I'd be able to laugh about it one day...

Re: First anniversary of Thundersnow!

  • Ahhh, Thundersnow.  Strangest weather ever...and yet I still had to work the next day because my boss was a jerk.  Angry

  • I can't believe what a clusterfuuck that was.

    I loved it!  But then again, I only had to drive 3 miles from work.

    Crazy how a year can be soooo different. What is it, like, 50 degrees today? lol

  • I'm all about making it a drinking  holiday.

    Call me crazy but I am kinda bummed there was no snowstorm this year :-(  And I normally have to go into work the day after, but I still miss it...

  • I remember ditching my car at the bottom of my hill and trudging up it carrying the 2yo and dragging the 3.5yo up to our house.  I had about a 40 min trip to make and I started out before the snow even started and it took me 3.5 hours because of all the accidents and people not driving properly in the snow.  If it were just me and the road I would have made it home in time to get up my hill in my little Elantra.  DH had a hell of a time just getting home from metro that evening too.  What a total clusterf*ck that was.
  • OMG, C was 6 days old, and we lost power for 4 days!  After vacating our home to stay with DH's aunt on the second night (because our house temp got down to 45 degrees), we became new proud owners of a small generator and two space heaters, sequestered ourselves to our basement, and camped out until the power came back on.

  • That weather event actually worked out for me.  My boss, who is all about working 'til the last possible second, let me go after the initial rush and just in time to get DD before traffic was TOO bad (and before the hill up to daycare became impassable for my car).  By the time the snow was getting bad, DD and I were at the dining room table while she was having dinner, and DH got home not long after.

    DH spent the night texting a friend who thought he'd work 'til 6 or so and spent 6 or 8 hours driving home to 7 Corners.  I'll have a drink to him and the rest of you who had a rough time of it.

    I'm probably having a baby in February, I need clear roads!!

  • What a crazy day! Fortunately, that Wednesday was my regular telework day and I was home, and Otto's office was only 5 minutes from home so he had no problem getting here before it got too heavy. I remember reading everyone else's stories on here the next day and counting my blessings.

  • There has been a huge snowstorm this week for the past 3 years.  I know, because it has practically ruined DD's birthday EVERY SINGLE YEAR!

    2009 = ice storm (which resulted in VERY cranky maternity ward nurses.)

    2010 = huge snowstorm

    2011 = thundersnow

    Keep your fingers crossed for nice weather tomorrow and Saturday... please!  :)

  • I made my husband come home early & he grumbled....until the news stories started of all these stuck people.

    Wives know best, duh!

  • Uh, don't remind me! My dad came in from Korea that evening. After an 18 hour flight, he spent another 8 hours in the car to get from Dulles to Gaithersburg. Worst travel experience ever for him.

    I have to say, I don't mind the fact that we haven't had any major snow storms yet this year.

  • My boss had offered me a ride.  So I spent all of those hours in the car with my boss (who is not the best at driving in snow/ice, but I didn't say anything even when we had to back 20+ feet down an exit ramp on 66).  Poor DH had to walk 3 miles in that stuff in leather dress shoes.

    I would love to celebrate, but the inlaws arrive in town tonight...  At least I'll have a free babysitter this weekend!

  • We got let out of school early and I made it home just as it started to snow.  I spent most of the night on the phone with my sister though.  It took her almost 5 hours to get the 8 miles from Tysons to her N Arlington apartment.

  • DH had to walk home because the metro buses never came.  The group of them walked from medical center to kensington.  a tree branch fell on them etc.  it was nuts.  i think it took them 3 hours to actually get home.  i was so worried and I was already home form work.

    Lol...alright Bh720 I take it back :)

  • I guess this just shows how "new mom sleep deprived" I was because I don't really remember much about that storm! All I can recall is we lost power for days (big surprise) and eventually wound up driving out to NoVA with our 5 week old baby, 2 cats, and dog to stay with my parents.

  • OMG, what a day. I forget what time I finally left work. We lived on MacArthur Blvd, and I wanted DH to come get me (he has 4WD). He set out and tried to get down to Georgetown to the Key Bridge. After an hour of that, he turned around to try to get to the Chain Bridge, but it was closed. When he found that out, he called me and said I'd have to either sleep at the studio or drive myself home. It wasn't so bad through Arlington & across Key Bridge into the city in terms of traffic (hardly anybody was going that way), but the roads were terrible. It was bad trying to make the turn onto M Street to Canal. I almost got hit by a bus there, then I almost got hit head on on the hill going up MacArthur because some guy in a Land Rover decided he was tired of waiting in the traffic and figured he'd drive in the oncoming lane. When I finally got to my building I couldn't get into my driveway because the pile of snow in front of it was too high. I was stuck across the lane, but luckily someone let me back out and I was able to find a place on one of the side streets. After all that, I still made it home before DH!
  • I was foolish that night.  I was on maternity leave and left to pick up DD 2 miles away right before the snow started, but I should have left earlier.  I was just puttering with the baby.  It took me an hour+ with a 3 week old to go 4 miles roundtrip.  I was really grateful to make it back home.  DH and I spent the night joking over text and facebook with friends trapped in their cars.
