Thoughts on Mandalay Bay

I'm in a friend's wedding in June, and we're in the process of planning her bachelorette party. We're looking to book a short trip to Vegas (April 12-15). We're currently in the process of deciding where to stay, and the MOH is leaning towards Mandalay Bay (not THEhotel, just the regular hotel). I've never stayed here but always liked it when I've walked through it.  I was wondering if anyone had any opinions, suggestions, or pros and cons for the hotel. There will be 7-9 women ranging from mid 20s to mid 30s staying with us. The only con I can think of so far is that it's so far on one end of the strip, we may have long walks or cab fares in our future. Thanks in advance for sharing your thoughts!

Re: Thoughts on Mandalay Bay

  • It is pretty far down on the strip.  We stayed at THEHotel at MB a few years back and the suite was really....sweet!!  LOL!

We loved the pool area, but we went in September and it wasn't super crowded like it would be in June.

  • my only "con" is the strip location.  The pools are great and I liked the casino.  I stayed there for a conference once, my room was just fine, but there are definitely nicer rooms on the strip.  I would be happy to stay there again if my company was paying for it, but i like to be more mid-strip if I am paying.

  • Another person weighing in on the location issue - we were there in December and really found it to be a pain to get anywhere. And cabs were expensive (cost us almost $40 roundtrip to get to the Venetian). The room was fine - nothing special (very corporate). Can't comment on the pool since it wasn't open.

I really like Mandalay, but more just to visit than to stay.  They have great restaurants and fun bars.  It is far down on the strip, but if you are willing to take the monorail and bus system, you can get anywhere you want to go for less money although it will take more time than a cab ride.  With that many girls you will need 2 cabs if you go that route and it can get pricey.

If you don't plan on doing as much at the hotel and want to check out more of the strip, try something more centrally located.  We stayed at a suite at Venetian for a bachelorette party and it slept 10 I believe.

Do you know which type of suite it was? I would live if we could gt a suite on the strip but I can't find one tht sleeps more than 6. I looked on the Venetian website and didn't see one tht slept 10.

I'm so sorry, I don't.  I looked online and don't see the one where we stayed.  It's been about 10 years so it's possible they don't offer that room any more.  Have you checked into timeshares at Westgate at Planet Hollywood?  That would be perfect for a big group.   I know they have big suites.  This one is ebay and is for a full week (and pricey), but this is similar to what I was thinking:

  • I had my bachelorette party in Vegas and we stayed at The Hotel.  Our suite was perfect and we liked the bar lounge on the rooftop.  The pool is very good too.  The only minor drawback was the location on the strip, but it didn't stop us from doing anything or going anywhere we wanted.  There's a free tram/train thing but I think it only goes as far as the intersection of NY, NY/MGM Grand.  But there's a ton of cabs, so there's that.

Here's another option--jockey club is right next door to bellagio:

How many people did your suit sleep, if you remember? Thanks!

Thanks so much for your help! These look good but I think we'd miss having a pool. I'll look into PH Towers for sure, though! Do you have any experience with The Signature MGM Grand?

  • I stayed at THEhotel for my bachelorette, too.  We booked at MB and told them it was for a bachelorette and we were upgraded when we arrived.  Our suite slept 5, I think, and had 1.5 bathrooms, so it was nice for getting ready with multiple people.

MB has some great restaurants, so I liked being there for that.  And the pool area is really nice.  We liked that it was at the end of the strip, so it wasn't as busy/crowded as other hotels.  When we wanted to retreat from the crowds, we could come back to the hotel.  It wasn't a big deal to us to not be centrally located.

  • I stayed @ The Hotel a few years ago and have visited Mandalay Bay each time I"m in Vegas..  it's a fun hotel, with lots of things to do, but the location is the major draw back.  I think you're better off looking at hotels more better located on the Strip... Venetian, Treasure Island, Bellagio or Caesar's.   You probably won't be able to get a suite to sleep all the girls, but what about adjoining rooms?

5 women, 2 each in a double or queen-sized bed and 1 on the living room couch.  I think the couch had a pull-out mattress too, if I'm not mistaken.  We were all comfortable, nothing cramped and there was a powder room bathroom in addition to the ginormous en suite bedroom bathroom.

I think there's a little grocery or liquor store across the street from the hotel, so you can pre-game.  It was a little over 3 years ago, though, so not sure if it's still there.

But there are plenty of pools that are open to the public, like Flamingo.

What about the Monte Carlo? It's not the most glamorous hotel on the Strip, but it's centrally located and nice for the money.

    I don't know...Hotel 32 was pretty spectacular.

Re the original question, I like Mandalay Bay a lot, particularly its restaurants.

This was our room at Mandalay.

This was our room at THEhotel.

Like everyone said, only the location may be a slight drawback.

We stay at Caesars Palace most often.  I think its location may be one of the best on The Strip.  Here is a room at Caesars.

Planet Hollywood has a decent location, too.  Here is our friends' room.

  • Cabs are rip off. The monorail is way better and cheaper, and a lot of the time it's faster too. We usually stay at the last stop of the monorail at the Hilton and just get the weekend pass for the monorail (unlimited use). That way we keep our car in the parking garage and don't have to drive on the strip at all, and don't have to pay for a cab. We prefer to stay further from the strip because it isn't noisy, but you probably want something more in the thick of things for a bachelorette party. We've taken the bus to Fremont Street before from the strip, so no cab there either. The only time we've taken a cab is from MGM to the Orleans for concerts and that's 20-30 dollars one way and not even that far from each other.

The only thing I know about Mandalay Bay is the buffet. My husband raved about it so we went once for dinner, and it was pretty awesome. All you can eat crab legs!
