Anyone familiar with the Black Hills, SD?
We are traveling to the Black Hills for our 2nd time. Any suggestions on fun things to do that aren't the usually touristy stuff? We've seen Mt Rushmore, Crazy Horse etc. We are looking for something a little different this time.
I know we are planning to take a trip up to Devils Tower if anyone is familiar with that area as well and knows of anything interesting to see of do.
Thanks in Advance!
Re: Anyone familiar with the Black Hills, SD?
Jewel Cave and Wind Cave both have good tours.
I liked driving the Nature Loop and the Needles highway as well.
The Badlands are not far away and tend to have fewer people. There are good hikes there you can take with a ranger. We found fossils on ours.
I do like to hike. We will be traveling with smaller children (3) also but we may have an opportunity to get away from the group and go for a hike on our own. If you could share some details that would be awesome. Thanks!
The previous poster mentioned a drive through wildlife zoo-I think she is thinking of Bear Country. My son (2) really enjoyed this and we were able to see all kinds of wildlife that we wouldn't necessarily get to see in the wild (bighorn sheep, reindeer, wolves) and then they have a part of the zoo where you get out and walk around and see animals that aren't free to roam, including grizzlies and baby black bears.
If you are interested, here's a link to my blog from the day we went to bear country and also took a drive on Spearfish Scenic Byway-very pretty!

Sorry, I forgot to check this board again.
We went to Custer State Park (which is really beautiful) & hiked Harney Peak - the highest point in SD. It's a pretty easy hike considering it's the highest point in SD. (7,242 ft) A fun fact about it, it is the highest point east of the Rocky's & West fo the Pyrenees Mnts in Europe. The trail is 6.6 miles round trip. It took us around 5 hours but we took our time (taking lots of pictures) & hung out at the top for a while.
Have fun! That part of SD is so nice!
