Question to team green mamas all are welcome though

Are you offended by use of the word it? On Jenns post I almost typed

"Excited to find out if it is a boy or a girl!"

I don't mean it in an offensive way, does IT bother you? My coworker yelled at me once for saying that before the mom had found out if it was a boy or a girl.

Re: Question to team green mamas all are welcome though

  • Weighing in even though I'm not pregnant yet, but I wouldn't find it insulting. "It" is a gender neutral noun in our modern English. Old school rules dictate that we use "he" when we don't know the gender, but I say Stick out tongue to that.

  • I never really thought twice about it....but I guess you could say "Excited to find out if 'your baby' is a boy or girl" , rather than it.

I think saying "your baby" and "the baby" got old and I am lazy!

this. i think people who are concerned about calling their baby "it" need to pick their wedgie cause their panties are definitely in a bunch.

it's not a big deal at all....and always always always, when you announce if "it's" a boy or a girl, it's ALWAYS "it's a girl" or "it's a boy"...it's never "baby is a boy!"

  • I never found using the term "it" offensive. Saying "the baby" did get old at times. Heck I still referred to him as "it" even after I found out he was a he sometimes.

  • I wouldn't and didn't find it offensive. More people asked "do you know what you're having?". I think there are way more offensive things said to pregnant women than refering to the baby as "it".

    For example:

    "Well aren't you looking fat"

"You look like you are running out of room for your shirt"

"At least your face looks skinny"

"We can hear you waddling now"

Those are just a few things I remember being told.....

I looked like this at 39 wks.

My mom on the other hand was having a fit when she heard me say something about baby and I called  "it", an "it".

  • I don't give a damn, LOL. "The baby" is fine. "It" is fine. "He" is fine. "She" is fine. "He or she" is fine. "They" is fine. "Zie" and all those recently-made-up gender-neutral pronouns are all fine.

I find myself saying "he or she" the most, personally, but none of it bothers me.

(Also, people who ARE bothered by "it" remind me of The Knights Who Say 'Ni' from Monty Python and the Holy Grail. Just sayin'.)

lol those are awesome, and you look so cute pg!

I think this is the thing that I will most hate about being pg - people already things it's totally ok to comment on my size now (I'm short/petite), I can't imagine how much worse it's going to get.  Like, do people really think they are being original?  With friends it's funny/cute and I don't mind, but with random people, I just want to say "WTH?!"

Thanks. Luckily very few people decided it was ok to just touch the belly. Most people just said random things.

  • Well, no, since you have no idea if the baby is a boy or girl, you can't really use "he/she" or whatever. I just try to use "they" or something to indicate it's at least human. :)

"team purple" is used for twins - one boy, one girl.
