Finger Lakes, NY

My H and I are looking to travel to the Finger Lakes for our anniversary in June.  We've never been there before so we're looking for suggestions on lodging (we prefer hotels) and which area of the Finger Lakes to stay at.  Any suggestions for restaurants & things to do would be appreciated!  Thanks ladies!

Married 6/10/09 in Bermuda.

Re: Finger Lakes, NY

  • We made a last minute anniversary trip there a few Octobers ago. We stayed in Canandaigua, at the Inn on Main (B&B, sorry). We stuck to Lake Canandaigua, in part because we only had a weekend. We just didn't have the time for one of the bigger lakes with tons of wineries.

McGregor's Grill & Tap Room in Canandaigua has your basic bar food, but 74 taps with rotating beer selections. We could have lived there ;)

We did a fancy dinner at the Belhurst Mansion (also a hotel, if you want to check it out). The wine tasting room was lovely, and the ambience was nice. The food was meh

  • we stayed at a cabin on keuka lake in 2009, it was gorgeous up there. we stopped at esperanza manion to take photos and it looked like a lovely place. we really enjoyed bully hill and heron hill vineyards. there were cute shops in hammondsport (bottom of the lake). keuka is pretty small so if you had more than a weekend, you could stay a few nights there and a few nights elsewhere. we had a really good lunch at bully hill. other than that, we grilled at our cabin.

  • I grew up in the Finger Lakes area - the B&Bs are very nice but if you really want a nice hotel try the Woodcliff Hotel and Spa (http://www.woodcliffhotelspa.com/).  It is just 25 mins north of Canandaigua. If you are considering doing a wine tour, Canandaigua is a good place to start - go around the east side of the lake, around the southern tip of Watkins Glen (nice state park) and up the west side of the lake.

  • I'm surprised to see all the recommendations for Canandaigua.  I lived in that area for a few years, and while I did have a very nice weekend at a B&B at Canandaigua, I felt like the wineries along Seneca and Cayuga were better, plus there's a lot more of them.  I never got a chance to go to Keuka, but supposedly the wineries there are great too.
  • The Harbor Hotel in Watkins Glen is nice.  We hiked the glen (it's really pretty) and did several wineries (Watkins Glen is at the base of the lake.  There are also cruises (including dinner cruises) on the lake....one of my friends got married on one of the boats and it was very nice and very scenic.

  • I have a post in my blog (link in siggy) about our long weekend trip to Keuka Lake/Hammondsport, NY if you'd like to read about what we did.  The highlight of our trip was hiking Watkins Glen State Park- it is beautiful!  We also did a lot of wine tasting, visited museums, went shopping, etc.
